Shirley Ann Cogdell

Shirley Anita Torbert Cogdell, 92, died Tuesday, January 5, 2016, under the care of Hospice Savannah.   Mrs. Cogdell was born in Society Hill, AL on February 3, 1923, the daughter of the late John Floyd and Ada Jennings Cline Torbert.  Mrs. Cogdell was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she served as a children’s Sunday School teacher for several years as well as a co-founder and teacher of the Spiritual Seekers Sunday School Class.  With her love of crafts, she was a vital contributor to the annual Grace Fall Festival.  She was a member and president of the Kensington Park Garden Club; a member of the Railway Ladies Society; and a lifetime blood donor to the Red Cross. Mrs. Cogdell was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, W. Donald Cogdell, Sr., her parents and her sister, Gloria Jean Torbert Dean.  She is survived by her son, W. Donald Cogdell, Jr. (Barbara); daughter, Shirley Coling (Kathi Pierce); four grandchildren, Wendy Coling, MD (Michael Klinge), Michael Coling (Melissa), Annie Cogdell and Caity Cogdell; two step-grandchildren, Karen Pierce Clark and Becky Pierce; and six great-grandchildren - Abby, Adam and Amanda Klinge as well as William, Wyatt and Warren Coling. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 16, at Grace United Methodist Church, followed by a visitation reception in the Social Hall. Have very fond memories of both Mr. & Mrs. Gogdell living at Rivers Edge. Back in the beginning of our neighborhood I did most of the maintenance on our entry gates. They would hear me out there and bring me a glass of water and or a soft drink and hang out with me for a few minutes while I tried to get the gates working again. Mrs. Gogdell told me one time Jamie you'll never get that put back together "referencing the gate gears" I told her your more than likely right but I am gonna give it a my best. The Gogdells hold a very special place in my heart. God has taken Mrs Gogdell home to be beside Mr, Gogdell, two wonderful folks we will miss.
