Celebrating the life of
Hunter D. Lupton
October 09, 1953 - March 04, 2016
SAVANNAH, GA – HUNTER DREWREY LUPTON, (62), died suddenly Friday, March 4, 2016, from complications of a recent surgery in Savannah, GA. Hunter was born in Jacksonville, FL, raised in Norfolk, VA, and Covington, TN. After matriculating from Byars Hall High School, in Covington, he enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology and joined the Chi Phi fraternity. He received a Bachelor’s of Civil Engineering in 1975, and was a life-long Yellow Jackets fan.
He recently retired with 40 years of federal civilian service as a civil engineer at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District. He was a member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church where he served as an usher, youth group chaperone, and briefly as chairman of the Wesley Gardens committee.
He served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the reactivated Troop 1 in the Coastal Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America. His love for Scouting included building a pinewood derby track that was shared across the Council. A trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch in 2003 inspired a love of the wilderness and backpacking. Following that trip, he planned and led Philmont backpacking treks, impacting and involving hundreds of scouts. On February 27, 2016, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest Council-level service award for adults.
He was an avid woodworking craftsman, stained glass artist, and homebuilder. He was backpacking the Appalachian Trail one section at a time, and he had finished 727.5 miles from Springer Mountain, GA, to Daleville, VA, with his hiking partner, Ash Grimmett, as the trail names SteakNShake.
He was devoted to his wife and sons. His love for faith was practiced daily. He has left a host of family members and friends with wonderful memories, stories, and examples of love to live by as we carry on.
He was preceded in death by mother Eleanor Drewrey McBride of Covington, TN and father Robert Allen Lupton of Virginia Beach, VA. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Cindy Smith Lupton, and sons Hunter Drewrey Lupton, Jr., of Atlanta, GA and William Morgan Lupton of Memphis, TN. He also leaves his step-father, Frank McBride, Jr. of Covington, TN; step-mother Jo Lupton of Virginia Beach, VA; half-brother Frank McBride, III and sister-in-law Lorraine McBride of Chapel Hill, NC; half-sister Anne Lupton of Houston, TX; nephew Frank McBride, IV and niece Olivia McBride; and numerous cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7th at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8th at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow in the Greeenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Paul Cleveland, Bob Cole, Ash Grimmett, Tom Howard, Forrest Lott, James Roberds, John Watts, and Scott Wright. Honorary pallbearers: every member of the Ivy Class from Wesley Monumental.
The family suggests any remembrances be made in his memory to Wesley Monumental – Wesley Gardens Fund at www.wesleymonumental.org/ or the Appalachian Trail Conservancy at www.appalachiantrail.org

The word of the Lord is clear in that any man who has accepted the Lord will be saved, and to be absent in the flesh is to be present with the Lord. Please let me know if you need anything. -Cousin Tom John 11:24-25 Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." 25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?"… Rom 10:13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." 2Corn 5:7-8 for we walk by faith, not by sight-- 8we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord

Vicki and I worked with Hunter for many years at the Corps of Engineers. I enjoyed many road trips with him where he shared great stories about hikes along the Appalachian trail, sons, scouts, you and bbq. Indeed between the two of us, there was never a bbq restaurant we did not take the time to explore. Through our many excursions, I came to admire his enthusiastic attitude about work and family. Hopefully, his zeal and passion will carry on through his sons and you! May God bless you and keep you!
