Celebrating the life of
James Montgomery Walker
October 07, 1923 - March 14, 2016
Savannah- James Montgomery Walker fell asleep peacefully in death at the age of 92 in his Wilmington Island home witnessing a most glorious sunset over the Wilmington River with his beloved wife of 64 years at his side. Mr. Walker was born in Atlanta, GA in 1923. He served with the 34th infantry division in WWII and saw combat as an infantryman during the Appenine campaign in Italy with the 5th army under Gen. Mark Clark. He received several awards including a service medal with bronze star. He recalled how he held his bible during the severe action and other infantrymen would come to his fox hole to just touch his bible. He made many promises at that time. After the war, Mr. Walker attended GA Tech and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Industrial Management. He was an avid, lifelong GA Tech fan. Crashing a Debutante party in Atlanta, he danced with the girl of his dreams. Shortly thereafter he married Mildred Lake Brown in 1951 and moved to Savannah in 1954. He was a clothing salesman calling on accounts in GA and South Carolina for approximately 40 years. Jim was a member of Wesley Monumental Methodist Church for 62 years and regularly attended the Wesley fellowship Sunday School. He also was a member of the Hardee Boys on Wilmington Island, Savannah Yacht Club, the Buckhead Boys Club, and a regular at the Island’s YMCA. He loved the outdoors and traveled extensively with his family camping across the USA. He would pitch his tent even up into his late 80’s. Mr. Walker was an avid runner and won several races in his age group – of course the races had to add an “above 80 age class”. He last completed the Talmadge Bridge run at the spry age of 86. He was known for his dry wit, words of wisdom, love for family and God, and indefatigable drive – he never gave up and …he kept his promises. He was a classic member of “The Greatest Generation” of Americans and there are few who could have filled his shoes.
Survivors are his wife, Mildred Brown Walker, son, Montgomery Brown Walker, daughter, Lake Walker Daly and her husband, Dr. James Anthony Daly III; and 5 grandchildren: Lane Walker Furey (Geoff), Madison Walker Daly, James Anthony Daly IV, Louisa Lake Daly, Kate Leona Daly; and great granddaughter: Elizabeth Lake Daly.
Visitation will be Friday, March 18, 2016 from 5-7PM at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, March 19th, 2016 at 11AM at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church followed by a private graveside service at Bonaventure Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to Wesley Monumental Espy House and the Islands YMCA.

We were so sorry to learn of Jim's passing. We remember the good times in the Fellowship Class at Wesley. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. I have many great memories of Mr. Walker. Many times that was when Monty and I were doing something we shouldn't have, and we usually got caught. Mr. Walker always made a point of including me in his conversations, and asking my opinion. That's the way he was and I appreciate that more now that I have grown children of my own. I also remember Mr. Walker's ability to get the most out of anything he owned (Cadillac, Cougar, Riding Lawnmower) despite Monty and my efforts to shorten their life. These are fond memories that I will always have.

Sorry to hear of Mr. Walker's pasting. I have GREAT memories as a Kid growing up just down the street; Mr. Walker's big white cadillac (bat mobile), Mr. and Mrs. Walker holding up my bike and giving me a BIG push to get me going, playing w/ Monty and Lake and of course -- the tire swing (which seem so big then) in the big live oak! His love for you will always be there in your heart and memories!! - Kurt

To the family of James M. Walker, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss. Mr. Montgomery was certainly blessed with a long and fruitful life. He was such a fine gentleman and upstanding example to all who had the privilege of meeting him. We are thankful for having had that privilege at the marriage of our son Geoffrey and your very lovely Lane. God bless you. We love you. Nancy Melita Furey on behalf of the Furey Family.

Dearest Mrs. Walker, Monty, Lake and Jim and the rest of your precious family. I am so thankful to have been able to share your Mr. Walker. My life was touched and I will never forget his kindness and warmth always toward me. I cherished my little visits to their home for big talks in the kitchen. He always treated me like family. I love you all and my prayers are with you. Until we see Mr. Walker again, I will cherish my very special memories!

We've know Mr. Walker for many years and have grown love him and his family very much. One word comes to mind when we think of him "Perseverance ". He didn't give up on himself despite his physical limitations . His determination was an inspiration to all that knew him.
