Celebrating the life of
Judith "Judy" B. Nichols
July 19, 1944 - March 14, 2016
Judith Beck Nichols, a lifelong Savannahian, died Sunday, March 13th, 2016 suddenly but at extreme and blessed peace. Judy attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy in 1963. After high school she attended Savannah Area Vocational-Technical School.
Judy worked at the Manger Hotel in Downtown Savannah shortly after graduation, and often mentioned fond memories of her time there. She later worked at Savannah Bank, Federal Bankruptcy Court, and Sears Catalog Department. Judy spent most of her career as the plant manager’s secretary at the Hunt Wesson Savannah refinery until its closing. She was a long time member of the Professional Secretaries International (PSI), including serving as President of the Savannah Chapter twice in 1993-1994 and again in 1996-1997. Later in her career Judy worked at the County Extension Service Office and then at Oglethorpe Mall.
She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart parish. For many years she served as First Communion teacher for the children of the parish. Judy also served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, bringing Communion to the elderly and shut-ins.
Judy was a loving single mother working two jobs to support her family and was well ahead of her time. Judy was a survivor, battling and beating cancer multiple times throughout her life. Everyone that met Judy knew her as independent, loving, and on-the-go, even with the challenges that later in life brought.
Following retirement she found fulfillment in volunteering. Judy drove seniors to medical appointments and delivered Meals On Wheels in the Thunderbolt area for quite some time. She later found overwhelming joy in her ‘little job’ volunteering at Candler Hospital on DeRenne several days a week as a greeter until her passing, volunteering for 795 blissful hours.
She is survived by her son, Harry Jordan Nichols, daughter-in-law, Melissa Ewers Nichols, cousin, Joyce Dunne, and cousin, Patricia Wilson.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2016 with a Rosary Service at 3:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 21, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in the name of Judith Nichols to one of the charities which were dear to Judy’s heart, either the St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital Auxiliary 5356 Reynolds Street, Suite 400 Savannah, GA 31405 or Sacred Heart Catholic Church 1707 Bull Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
