James Charles Smith

James Charles Smith, 76, of Savannah, died April 16, 2016, at Memorial University Medical Center, in Savannah, Georgia. He was born March 1, 1940, in Statesboro, Georgia, to Charles Lloyd and Mamie Nevil Smith, both of whom preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Melinda Harn Smith, and son, James Kevin Smith (Katie), of Milton, Georgia. In addition to his parents, his sister, Joanne Smith Merritt, preceded him in death. 

Mr. Smith lived in Savannah for most of his life. After graduating from Savannah High School, he attended Armstrong University and Georgia Southern University. He was retired from Dan Vaden Chevrolet, where he was comptroller for 40 years. Previous to that, he spent eight years at the Georgia Department of Revenue in the sales and use tax unit. 

Mr. Smith was a member of Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Landrum Masonic Lodge #48, 32nd degree, Scottish Rite, and Alee Temple of Shriners International. He was a former member of Forest City Gun Club and the Georgia Automobile Association. 

A funeral service for Mr. Smith will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Isle of Hope United Methodist Church or Hospice Savannah.
