April 20, 1923 - May 04, 2016

Dr. John Hamilton Angell

John Hamilton Angell died peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 3. He was born on April 20, 1923 in Towson, Maryland, the son of Norman and Irma Angell and younger brother of the late Edward Angell. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Ashby Lippitt Angell, a daughter, Catherine (Elmer Whaley), five sons--John, Clayton (Ann), Charles, Stephen, and Thomas, nine grandchildren—Frazier, Ashby, Caroline, Cowan, Sarina, Haigh, Carlton, Pitts and Victor, as well as his beloved caregiver, Kathy Bell.

Dr. Angell attended Towson High School in Towson, MD, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD in 1943 and from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1947. He served in the Army ROTC, later attaining the rank of Captain and serving as Chief of Obstetrics at Valley Forge Army Hospital in Valley Forge, PA.

Dr. Angell moved to Savannah in 1955 to practice obstetrics and gynecology and retired in 1991 after delivering over 15,000 babies and helping found the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at the Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

A member of Christ Church Anglican Church in Savannah, he was a long-standing member of the Sons of the Colonial Wars, the German Heritage Society, the Georgia Medical Society, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Oglethorpe Club, the Savannah Golf Club, and the Rump Steak Club. An avid tennis player and skier and a passionate gardener, Dr. Angell was especially proud of his nine grandchildren. He also loved taking care of the peach trees, livestock, and vegetable gardens on his Jenkins County farm.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend a memorial service at Christ Church Anglican, 2020 Bull Street, Savannah to be held at 4 o’clock on Friday, May 6. A family graveside ceremony will be held at his beloved farm on Saturday, May 7. The family requests that donations in Dr. Angell’s name be sent to Hospice Savannah at http://www.hospicesavannah.org/Give/ and to Christ Church Anglican, 2020 Bull Street, Savannah, GA 31401.

When two become one they embark on an adventure that rivals most. When one is lost the emptiness can seem overwhelming. You're living through what is said to be the most stressful situation a person can endure. You've lost a part of yourself. Remember though, just a part. You can hold on, life will find healing, not today or tomorrow, and maybe not for a long time. But the healing will come. Psalm 27: 5 assures you, "For he will hide me in his shelter on the day of calamity; He will conceal me in the secret place of his tent; high on a rock he will place me". Stay in that place of concealment as long as you need to. Those who truly love you will stay at your side.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Angell's passing. He was a very important mentor in my life. I was his first secretary on April 1st, 1955. He taught me so much and I think about him often. God bless his family during this time of loss. He gave so much that lives on.

Sincere Condolences to you and the family, Asby, but no mourning for John, who had a full and wonderful life, one deserving celebration for his many accomplishments and the joy his friendship and skills brought to so many.

I was so sadden to read about the doctor who delivered my babies as well as took extra care of me whenever I had a problem. Doctor Angell has been in my family for a very long time. To the family just know: "Blessed be the GOD and Father of our LORD JESUSS CHRIST, the Father of mercies and GOD of al comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by GOD." 1 Corinthians 1:3-4. Gone but not forgotten

So sorry to hear about John. The flowers that you sent were lovely, they really brightened up the room. You were so kind to think of me, when you have had so much with which to endure. I have had John on my mind. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm saddened by the news of John's passing and our thoughts and prayers are with all of John's family & friends. John and the Angel's were such good friends of the Dunn family for so many years. John delivered all of us into the world and he was such a wonderful man. John will be missed however, never forgotten. - Joe Dunn

"Your Knowledge, God, is wondrous, fear inspiring; Of this my soul is very well aware. If I should fear that darkness might enfold me, Your Spirit, God, would find me, even there." Psalm 139 "God is greater than our hearts and knows all things." 1 John 3:20

I was a patient of Dr. Angell from 1972 until just before his retirement. I will always be grateful for his expert care and compassion as I entered into motherhood at age 16. He was a wonderful doctor and well respected. May your memories give comfort and your heart be at peace. Prayers.
