Shirley C. Malone
October 19, 1941 - May 14, 2016
Shirley (Conover) Malone, age 74 of Skidaway Island, Savannah, Georgia died on May 8, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a long illness. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Frances Alberta (Zeiner ) Conover and John Conover of Cincinnati, OH.
Shirley graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1963 with a degree in Political Science. She completed her MBA from the prestigious Executive Program at University of Chicago. Upon graduation from Northwestern University, Shirley was employed at Time Incorporated in Chicago. During her 18 years at Time, Inc., she was a Business Manager in the Telecommunications and Customer Service Division. She helped to grow and develop their telephone sales and customer service operations.
In 1983 she was elected the first female Vice President at the Chicago Tribune in Chicago. She was accountable for the systems development, installation and implementation of their telephone sales and customer service operations. Shirley continued her career with Newsweek in New York City, NY.
In 1984 she married Joseph L. Malone, Jr. Shirley and Joe joined professional and personal strengths to form a powerful and successful consulting partnership that continued until the mid 1990’s.
Shirley was a brilliant business and operations expert who brought her intelligence, strong work ethic, humor and warmth to each exchange.
Shirley and Joe moved to Skidaway Island, Georgia in 1989 and built a beautiful and full life in this community. Shirley was an avid golfer, tennis player and reader. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Joseph. Together they welcomed his 8 children and 16 grandchildren into their lives and home. Shirley was especially close with Joe’s daughter, Peggy who visited every summer.
Shirley was a beloved member of the Landings golf community, participating in a gold group, the “PAR-TEE’s”. In addition to her husband and step children and grandchildren, Shirley is survived by many former colleagues, friends and neighbors.
Services, including a Catholic Funeral Mass, will be celebrated on May 14, 2016 at St. James Catholic Church in Savannah at 10am. Burial to be on Monday, May 16 at 10am at Catholic Cemetery.
