Celebrating the life of

Mitzi Mears Thomas

February 09, 1933 - May 18, 2016

Mitzi Mears Thomas

Mitzi Mears Thomas was born in Walterboro, SC to Louise Gatch and Luther Mears. The small family moved to Savannah shortly after that. She was very fond of her Charleston, South Carolina clan, especially her cousin, Jackie Torell, whom was more like a sister to her. She met her true love in life, her husband Marvin Thomas in high school and they married in 1951.   Mitzi was very close to his family in Savannah, especially her sister-in-law, Ernestine Underwood and the Holton family. Mom loved education and was an avid reader. She was truly thrilled to attend Armstrong College in the 1970’s. Travelling was also another thrill and they traveled to Japan and China in 1987 and to Scandinavia and Russia in 1988. Then she and Marvin tried to see as much of the USA as possible. They were longtime members of the Savannah Golf Club and she took up golf so she could compete with Marvin, the “number 1 golf nut in the world”. She was especially close to her bridge friends, thanks to Jean McCall. Sadly Marvin passed away in January 2014. She continued to live between her Spanish Hammock Tybee home and the homes of Lisa and Craig, her children.

She is survived by her son, Craig Thomas (Angela), daughter, Lisa Linton (Chuck), three grandchildren, Steven Mears Thomas, Lauren Dempsey Hinkle (Ben), Scott Dempsey (Stephanie), four great-grandchildren, Emmelin and Adlee Hinkle, Isabella and Luke Dempsey, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.

The funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 23, 2016 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please help contribute to the Alzheimer’s Association or support Hospice Savannah, Inc.

GUEST BOOK

We are truly saddened at Mitzi's passing. Some of our best memories are of going to see Mitzi and Marvin at their home on Tybee Island for family get-togethers. We know that Mitzi is reunited with Marvin and they are very happy in heaven together. Craig and Lisa our thoughts and prayers are you at this time of loss.

- Phil and Susan Torell, Hinesville, GA

Our condolences go to the family and friends of Mitzi's. She was a person that will be truly missed. We hold fond memories of family gatherings and Low Country Boils. Her heartfelt kindness will always be remembered.

Mitzi was a very special person and will surely be missed by all who knew her; I can only imagine the happy reunion in heaven right now. She and Marvin are together once again and there are lots of friends and family who have gone before them that will be happy to see them. My deepest sympathies to Craig and Angela, and Lisa and the family.

Craig and Lisa, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. My thoughts are with you in your time of grief.

- Danny Flanders, Signal Mountain, Tn, Tn

The Stott family extends their heartfelt condolences to Lisa, Craig and many other family members who knew and loved Mitzi. She lived her life lovingly serving her family, church and community. She was "Southern Hospitality" to the core of her being. Someone once said, "The most rewarding end of life is to know the life that never ends." As one who knew Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, I believe that Mitzi is more alive now than ever. Mitzi lived right and died right. May God comfort and bless all family members in this time of bereavement.

- Ralph Vernon Stott, North Chicago, IL

I know that God has welcomed Aunt Mitzi to her heavenly eternal home and that she has been reunited with Uncle Marvin and her dear friend, my Mother (Joan Surrency Raymond). May God wrap His loving comforting arms around Craig, Lisa and all family and friends during their time of grief. In Jesus holy name, Amen. Sending much Love, LaRandie.
