Celebrating the life of

Carolyn Aubrey Humphries

April 26, 1928 - July 26, 2016

Carolyn Aubrey Humphries

Carolyn Aubrey Humphries, 88, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016, in Savannah, GA. She was born in Waynesboro, PA, but she loved her Southern roots and moved to Georgia after her marriage to Dr. Arthur L. Humphries. Carolyn was fiercely proud of her family and enjoyed telling stories of her ancestors and their adventures. As a life-long singer and pianist, Carolyn’s life was always full of music.

A graduate of Sweet Briar College, Carolyn was passionate about historic preservation and was the first Executive Director of Historic Augusta in Augusta, GA. Her delight in research into historic buildings led her to work as a member of the Georgia National Register Review Board, as the Director of the Historic Resources Commission of Asheville and Buncombe County, NC, and as a historic preservation consultant for the North Carolina Division of Archives and History.   She was active in the Episcopal Church and in 1968 was the first woman elected to a vestry in the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. She was a member of the Garden Club of America, the Association of Junior Leagues, and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. While in Augusta, Carolyn was a co-founder of the Richmond County Home Health Agency, Augusta, the first non-profit home health service in Georgia.

Carolyn is pre-deceased by her sister, Louise Aubrey McFarland and is survived by her children, Ann B. Humphries, William H. Humphries, Aubrey H. Brawner (James N.), and Helen H. Bennett, her grandchildren, Russell Humphries, James Brawner, Miranda Brawner, Grayson Bennett and Candler Bennett, her daughter-in-law, Gayle Humphries, and loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service with interment will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Augusta, GA, Saturday, August 6th, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to a favorite charity or to Savannah Country Day School.

Aubrey and family, It is truly with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye to your Mom, Carolyn. What a lovely, sweet, intelligent Lady she was, and funny too. Her smile and her laugh brought joy into our lives. We loved her and will miss her greatly. Our neighborhood already feels empty without her. May the Lord comfort all of you and keep you in His care. Much love, Jen & Ross Osborne

Tattie would arrange tea parties with my grandmothers so that they could all group-brag about their collective grandbabies. It always made me feel good to know that my best friend's grandmother was friends with my grandmothers. I will always be appreciative of Tattie's Cashiers connections because the North Carolina Mountains gave me such wonderful childhood memories.

Tattie was a lovely unique woman, who certainly put her stamp on the world. I loved reading this obituary to learn new things about her (founding the home health care and being the first woman on the vestry in Georgia). We loved her like our own.

Carolyn was an amazing, brilliant, courageous, and feisty woman that I had the good pleasure to know for the past fourteen years. My family and I will miss her. Rich, the girls, and I extend our sincere condolences to her family.
