Celebrating the life of

Eva Ida Scott

July 02, 1928 - August 23, 2016

Loving and Devoted Wife, Mother and Friend. Accomplished Pianist

Eva Ida Scott

Savannah - Eva Ida Scott died Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Memorial University Hospital in Savannah. Eva moved on to her eternal reward in Memorial’s Emergency Department while waiting to be admitted to hospice care. Her medical team provided excellent care to Eva and compassionate care to her family and friends who were gathered with her.

Eva turned 88 years old on July 2, 2016. She was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1928 to her parents Joseph and Lydia Keri. She, her parents and five siblings survived the German and Russian occupations during World War II.

Eva excelled in her studies and earned the privilege of attending Semmelweis Medical School to become a physician. As a part of her studies she was sent to England to learn English and finish her medical studies. Ultimately the Hungarian Communist State withdrew their support claiming her exposure to Western Culture made her persona non grata. Alone and without support, she found work, learned English and finished her education as a Nurse. She practiced as a Nurse for over 40 years – she served as the Operating Room Supervisor at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens GA.

Eva married a physicist – Dr. Alan Scott, PhD. In 1954, the couple immigrated to America where they would eventually become citizens. Eva is survived by her husband Alan, who resides in Athens; her daughters and son-in-law, Fiona and Michael Johnson of Savannah and Anita Scott MD of Oahu, Hawaii.

Eva was an accomplished pianist and composed a piece of music, Val Triste, in remembrance of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. She sang for many years with the Athens Choral Society, she was an active member of The Athens Garden Club and she was a member of the Athens German Club. Eva fostered relationships with friends and relatives of every faith and race from around the globe – it was her own little United Nations.

A celebration of life service will be held at her daughter’s home on the Isle of Hope at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2016. There will be an additional Memorial Service at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home in Athens at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2016. In lieu of flowers, please send commemorative donations to the American Diabetes Association at http://www.stopdiabetes.com/ or 5105 Paulsen Street, #236, Savannah, GA 31405.

Fiona and Anita, I am sorry for your loss. Miss Eva was an amazing woman. I've loved her for 50+ years. Her role in helping us with my dad was a Godsend. I'll never forget her kindness. I know my dad is on her welcoming committee in Heaven and they'll be singing and playing the piano in no time. Cherish the beautiful memories she provided for you girls. You were truly blessed to have such a phenomenal lady as your mother.

I grew up two doors down the street from the Scotts, and I always admired Mrs. Scott so much. Anita and Fiona were older than me, so I didn't see them much as we all got older, but I have fun memories of being with them when we were younger. I will never forget Mrs. Scott's kind smile and twinkling eyes! I was just telling my children recently about the sweet sweet woman who I saw when I came out of anesthesia after I got my tonsils out - what a compassionate nurse. Mrs. Scott made sure she was the one to be with me as I 'went out' and again as I 'came to.' What a kind soul. I'm only now reading and learning so much more about her - what an amazing life! I'm sending good thoughts and love to Anita, Fiona, and Mr. Scott.

I met Eva and when she and her husband, Alan, came to the U.S. Alan and my husband, Robert Cole, were newly employed by the Physics Department at U.C.L.A. and we became friends sharing the problems of adapting to a new life. We introduced Eva and Alan to how to do things in America and they helped Bob and me become more informed about the world. We had many good times and have been life long friends ever since. Eva was always special and I will miss her.

- Donna Cole, Van Nuys, CA

It was a great joy to have known Eva, and we will cherish our memories. She was such a great friend to my mother, and now my Sainted father.

- Larry and Bonnie Townsend, Hampton, GA

I am so sorry for your loss, as is Phil. She and you, Fiona and Mike, will be in my prayers. Love to you both.

- Hallie and Phil Wolfe , Ossining, NY

Growing up in Athens, Eva was like a 2nd mother to me.She was like a 2nd mother to many of Fiona and Anita’s friends. I spent many wonderful days and nights at the Scott home during my jr. high, high school, college and post college days. She threw a wedding shower and baby shower for me in my later years. She was my mother’s best friend. She and Alan were devoted friends to both my parents. Parties and dinners at their house were always full of interesting people from all over the world...full of laughter and the sounds of her playing the piano . Our mothers celebrated their 80th birthday together in a mass celebration...so many memories of this wonderful, full of life woman. You lived a wonderful and interesting life....may you now enjoy peace in your eternal home!

- Andrea Townsend, Peachtree Corners,, Georgia

Our Eva will live forever in our hearts and who we are. The epitome of grace and graciousness. What an amazing woman. I don't think she ever met a stranger and loved so many people from all walks of life. The stories she told could fill a history book. She might no longer be on this world with us; but we know that she is waiting for us with open arms. Forever loved, forever grateful to have had her in our life. Prayers of peace to Alan, Fiona, Anita, Michael
