Our prayers and sympathy are with the Roughen Family due to the loss of a loved one. I recall Mary when she was a small child, a very sweet child and always had a smile on her face.I was lucky to have seen her last year and she still had that lovely smile on her face and had become a beautiful lady. May she rest in peace in God's arms.

I've been thinking about Mary a lot since last night. In addition to all the usual silly fun friends have, we had a fair number of legitimate adventures. Swimming, surfing and diving at the beach house in Mexico (the house is still there, and I still go 4 or 5 times a year), sailing to the channel islands off the coast of California, running around the Nevada desert in crazy outfits for Burning Man, and driving through Mexico with a bunch of boys from Savanah Georgia to see Grey whales. If I told people who didn't know Mary the stories, I don't think they'd believe me. Were someone to write a novel, the author would have to be some sort of odd stepchild of Pat Conroy, Tom Robbins, and Jimmy Buffet. I've been lucky to have a large number of good friends over the course of my life, but Mary fell into a special category. For all the love, support, and good times I've had with my all my friends, she's one of the few who affected and changed my character at a deep level. I am a much kinder, wiser, and better person for having known her than I otherwise might have been. She managed to do all this just by being Mary, and being my friend. One of life's great mysteries - Mary was maybe the smartest person I ever met. In this case I don't mean street smart, or experienced, although she was those things. I mean the pure, dorky, Stephen Hawking kind of smart. She didn't really advertise it, and could hold a conversation with anyone, but she was an amazing intellect. So, that being the case, how is it she was the biggest sucker in the world for, of all things, the Home Shopping Channel? At one point, her little place in Sierra Madre was like a warehouse for "As seen on TV". WTH? I know that I, and we, were fortunate to have Mary in our lives at all, and I am grateful for that. But the world was a better place with her in it and now she's not, and so I feel a loss as well - so I'm going to be sad and ornery for a bit along with all the other feelings.

I met Mary (Mercedia) in Azeroth playing World of Warcraft. Although I never met her in real life, I had a lot of fun playing games with her online. I always looked forward to playing with her and have missed her ever since she stopped playing. She was a truly nice person and my heartfelt condolences go out to her family. Rest in peace, Merc.
