Laura Belle Wyatt Macrae

Laura Belle Wyatt Macrae, 97, died September 2, 2016. She was born July 4, 1919 in Takoma Park, MD to the late Walter and Sara Almira “Allie” Graves Wyatt. She was a resident of Savannah for the past 37 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bruce Farquhar Macrae.

She is survived by her son Stuart Wyatt Macrae, of Herndon, VA, sister, Jane Wyatt DeFreitas, of Charlottesville, VA, and her nephew, Wyatt Ashby DeFreitas, of Las Vega, NV.

In 1930 her family moved to the District of Columbia, where she lived until her marriage to Bruce Farquhar Macrae on September 6, 1952. The newlyweds lived in Silver Springs, MD until 1955 when they moved to Jacksonville, FL. In 1979 they moved to Savannah, GA.

Mrs. Macrae attended Marjorie Webster Junior College and George Washington University in Washington, DC. During World War II she worked for the U.S. Treasury Department and Administration office of the U.S. Courts.

She was a member of the Savannah Symphony Guild, where she served as Recording Secretary, Vice-President of Education, Notes Editor, Treasurer, and also was the winner of the Katherine Driscoll Award.

She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, where she served as Savannah Town Committee Chairman, Roster Secretary for the State of Georgia, Archivist for the State of Georgia, and a member of their National Honor Roll.

Mrs. Macrae was Burgess for Georgia for the First Families of Virginia. An over fifty year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, member of various chapters presently Lachlan McIntosh, where she was Regent for six consecutive years, and had been registrar, and also the state of Georgia Chairman of the Fifty-Year Club.

She was a Life Member of Friday Musical of Jacksonville, FL, treasure for Georgia Daughters of Colonial Wars, Recording Secretary Royal Chapter Daughters of American Colonists, Past Treasurer Clan MacRae Society of North America, Life member of the Navy League, and an over fifty year member of Alpha Delta Sorority, former National Officer.

A member of the Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church, she was a member of the choir, and a Deacon.

In spite of her many organizational activities, she made time for her favorite hobbies: gardening, reading, needlepoint, and cross stitch, singing with her church choir and taking voice lessons.

Visitation will be 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.

Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 11, 2016 at the Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery in Culpepper, VA.

Remembrances may be made to the Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church, the American Heart Association, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
