Celebrating the life of
Judith Elaine Dech Focht
May 29, 1928 - September 08, 2016
Judith Elaine Focht, age 88, passed away on Thursday, September 08, 2016 at The Oaks of The Marshes of Skidaway Island, Savannah. She was born May 29, 1928 in Akron Ohio to Arthur Dech and Effie (Bennett) Dech, the second of two daughters with her sister Joanne Dech (later Wolf). From an early age, Judith’s passion for dance and the arts shines in a 6 year old performance of The Light Opera at the Goodyear Theatre. Classically trained in ballet, she performed often with her mentor’s Adeline Ott Lahrmer Dance Troupe, The Akron Civic Opera and The Akron Ballet. She attended Pembroke College at Brown University graduating with a B.A. in English and Drama. An enthusiastic member of The Brownbrokers, she acted in and helped produce numerous musicals and plays.
In 1951 she married her great love, Donald Focht. While living in Chicago, she was an English Teacher at New Trier High School. When they moved the family to Atlanta, GA in the 60’s, she opened a dance studio for young girls as had her mentor before her, teaching ballet and tap and enjoying every minute. She became involved in Atlanta supporting The Arts; she had magical skills in organizing events. She is also a past president (1970) of the Young Matrons Circle for Tallulah Falls School. After raising their family, then spending six wonderful years in Belgium, Don & Judith retired to Skidaway Island, Savannah where they enjoyed each other’s company to the fullest, married 61 years, at Don’s death in 2012. Judith considered her life with her husband and her two children her greatest accomplishment and joy. She is survived by her children Kimberly Skye Focht and Thomas Jeffrey Focht, his wife Lia, and by her four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lindsay, Denver and Landon as well as her dear nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family ceremony in Ohio for both Donald and Judith who will be laid to rest together as one. The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to everyone at The Oaks and to Hospice of Savannah for their attentiveness and loving care.
