An Exceptional Woman of The Greatest Generation
What a great lady!! What a great spirit!! What a great intellect!! What a great memory!! What amazing energy!!
Katherine Morgan Cann passed away suddenly on September 24, 2016 at the age of 95, only 2 months shy of her 96th birthday.
Born in Guyton, Georgia, she was the oldest daughter of Katherine Fox and G Philip Morgan, a successful businessman and founder of Morgans Incorporated, an industrial supply business in Savannah, Ga. She attended Agnes Scott College and graduated with a degree in Art from the University of Georgia, where she studied under Lamar Dodd. She was instrumental in helping establish the Lamar Dodd Art Scholarship fund at UGA. She was member of Chi Omega sorority.
Upon graduation, in 1943 she enlisted in the Women's Army Corp and became a lieutenant in the Intelligence Division of the U S Army where she handled German POW's in the U.S. among other duties.
In 1950, she married Ferris Cann Jr and lived in Savannah where she was active in the Junior League, the Georgia Historical Society and several garden clubs. She had two children, Betsy Cann Akers and Ferris Cann III.
She was a woman of independent spirit and championed many causes with boundless energy, most notably speaking in front of Congress to get a bill passed to test pregnant women for Toxoplasmosis. She was also very active in Georgia politics. Artistically inclined, she had many talents including playing the pipe organ for her church and arranging flowers as beautifully as the finest florist. She had a real eye for decorating as well and had amazing taste and style.
She was devoted to timberland preservation because of Samwilka, the private family land company where she had served as president. She loved the pine trees!!
After the death of her husband, she relocated to Atlanta to be with her son, Ferris Cann III and daughter Betsy Cann Akers. She was a wonderful grandmother to her four Akers grandsons and shared her love of travel with all of her family, planning fabulous trips to Europe for her grandsons to study art and architecture. She never missed an athletic event or theatrical performance of her grandsons whom she absolutely adored, and she was their beloved "Kaka".
She was a member of the Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia and did all the geneology for her son-in-law and grandsons who joined the Society of Colonial Wars. She was a past member of the Oglethorpe Club and the Savannah Golf Club.
She loved to quietly do for others and was well known for her hand knitted and crocheted baby gifts, afghans and knitted hats. She was a quiet contributor to many Christian ministries and small churches in Effingham County.
She is predeceased by her 5 siblings, G Philip Morgan Jr, Edward H Morgan, Eleanor Morgan Atuk, Augusta Morgan Horsey and Sarah Frances Morgan McAlpin as well as her husband J Ferris Cann Jr and son J Ferris Cann III.
She is survived by her daughter Betsy Cann Akers of Atlanta, son-in-law C Scott Akers Jr and four grandsons, Calvin Scott Akers III (Hampton), Philip Morgan Akers, William Cann Akers (Megan) and George Frederick Akers as well as 2 great grandchildren, Maury Fontaine Akers and Benjamin Scott Akers. She will be sorely missed by all of her family.
She and her family would like to thank her wonderful physician Dr. Charles Wilmer at Piedmont Hospital for his excellent care and attention.
There will be a graveside service at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah at 11:30 on Saturday, October 1 with a reception to follow at the Oglethorpe Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Leading the Way Ministries, P O Box 20100, Atlanta, Ga 30325.
