SAVANNAH – Jackie Horne, 85, of Wilmington Island, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2016, in Savannah.

Jackie was born and raised in the Leefield Community of Bulloch County, and spent her married life on Wilmington Island. Jackie graduated from Brooklet High School and Georgia Teachers College, with a B.S. Degree in Business Education with a Minor in Music. She also received her Master of Business Administration from Georgia Southern University. Jackie taught Business Administration in Jenkins High School for 10 years. During those years, she served as president of GA Vocational Association of GA in 1969. She was the first vocational office training teacher in Chatham County and a life member of the National Vocation Association.

In 1963, Jackie and her then husband, Alex Roach, started a church mission in their home on Wilmington Island Road. Jackie was the church pianist, and the church grew to become The Baptist Church of the Islands.

She loved people and touched the lives of many individuals as an educator and later as a Realtor. Before leaving her high school teaching career, she obtained a Georgia Real Estate license and opened “Jackie Roach Realty”. Jackie became the first Realtor to open a Real Estate School in Savannah taught the class for 16 years.

Jackie later became a member & Sunday School teacher at Wilmington Island Methodist Church with her husband Loring Horne. Over the next 30 years, Jackie enjoyed a long and distinguished real estate career which included being President of the Georgia Women’s Council of Realtors in 1976; Vice President of the Savannah Board of Realtors; a constant member of the “Million Dollar Club”; Director of the Georgia Association of Realtors; and working to establish the “Multiple Listing Service of Savannah”. Jackie closed her company in 1992 and became an Associate Broker with Cora Bett Thomas Realty until her retirement in 1995.

Jackie’s greatest accomplishment in life was her family. She is survived by her husband, Loring C. Horne; her daughter, Kathy Roach Griner; grandsons, Chris and Kevin Roach; step-grandchildren, Brandon (wife Amanda) and Amanda Woods; step-great-grandchildren, Ella Kate & Palmer Woods, all of Savannah. Also surviving are her sisters, Sue Knight Ryals of Brooklet, Betty Knight Minick of Statesboro, Dot Knight Fordham of Helen and Jannel Knight Starling of Brooklet; her step-sister, Sandra Hart Peebles of Hilton Head Island, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Horne was preceded in death by her son, Andrew Allen Roach, her first husband, Alex Roach, her parents, Andrew J. Knight and Lorene Bradley Knight Hart; her step-daughter, Jean Horne Woods, and her step-father, Oscar Hart.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at Brooklet Primitive Baptist Church followed by interment in Brooklet City Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the many caregivers that participated in caring for Jackie through her years of illness.
