Elizabeth Harlow Bangs
May 18, 1923 - October 14, 2016
Elizabeth Harlow Bangs
Elizabeth Harlow Bangs, age 93, passed away on October 14, 2016 at her home in Savannah, GA. Betty was born on May 18, 1923 and grew up in Newton, Mass. She graduated from Connecticut College for Women.
In 1945, she married John Bangs of Iowa, a Navy gunnery officer on the USS Augusta and later Corporate Secretary for American Cyanamid.
They moved to Summit, NJ where she started her community service, co-founding the Summit First Aid Squad. She also served as president of the nonprofit Summit Area Community School and the Junior League.
Languages came easily to Betty, who taught at the Summit French School. Her love of European culture led to much overseas travel and international friendships.
Devout, she taught confirmation classes, sang contralto in the Lutheran Church, offered spiritual counseling and volunteered with Hospice Savannah.
Even when slowed by age, Betty stayed good-natured and gregarious, cherishing bridge games with friends and any book by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
She is survived by son John Bangs of Millington, NJ; daughter Amy and Ed Miller of Aston, PA; son Greg and Anne Bangs of Chatham, NJ; grandchildren Stephen and Kirsten Bangs, David and Karen Matthes; goddaughter Lisa Krieger and many friends whose lives she enriched. She is predeceased by husband John.
