Jimmie Johnson Padgett

April 07, 1936 - October 21, 2016

Jimmie Johnson Padgett

SAVANNAH - Jimmie Johnson Padgett, 80, passed away Friday, October 21, 2016 at Spanish Oaks Retreat after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Blackshear, Georgia and was the daughter of Thomas and Myrtis Hutchinson Johnson. Upon graduating from Blackshear High School in 1954, she accepted a scholarship from the Warren A. Candler School of Nursing. She became a registered nurse with Candler Hospital, where she lovingly cared for patients for over 30 years.

She was a member of the Candler Alumni Association and the Candler Auxiliary. Upon her retirement, she volunteered in the Candler Gift Shop for many years. Mrs. Padgett also enjoyed spending time as a Master Docent at the Telfair Art Museum. She was a member of the Garden Club of Savannah and served as the Co-Chair of the North of Gaston Garden Tour.

One of her favorite pastimes was playing bridge. An avid and competitive player, she loved the friendships built through playing bridge and was associated with many different bridge clubs throughout the years.

She was an active member of Wilmington Island United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class.

Jimmie’s greatest joys in life were her relationship with God and family. She poured herself selflessly into them. She also loved hospitality, decorating, fashion, shopping, and family get-togethers. Her laughter was contagious, and she never met a stranger.

But perhaps the most significant legacy she leaves with those who knew her was her strong values and love for others. Jimmie exemplified this best through her generosity to those in need.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Harry J. Padgett III, of Savannah, daughters Dee Padgett Howard (Mark) of Savannah, Jenny Aldridge (Randy) of Auburn, AL, brother Tommie Johnson of Salt Lake City, UT, sister Bobbie O’Quinn (Russell) of Blackshear, GA, grandchildren Mary Kathryn Smith (Chris), Hailey White, Caroline White, Chase, Jackson, Sam, Margaret, and Ben Aldridge, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Spanish Oaks Retreat for loving and caring for her so well throughout her illness.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at Wilmington Island United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be private.

Remembrances: Alzheimer’s Association, 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA 31406 or Wilmington Island United Methodist Church.

GUEST BOOK

Dee, I remember your sweet mother very well. I spent many hours at your house. We were BEST back door friends for many years. Your mom taught me many things including how to keep things clean! She was always a stickler for a clean house. It must have been the nurse in her! She took great care of her family and always had a smile and laugh to offer! I know that you have all struggled to care for her during her illness. Her faith was strong so I am sure she is in the arms of Jesus now! I will be praying during this difficult time. Love to all of you .

Harry, Bob and I were very sorry to hear about Jimmie. I have missed her laugh and her funny stories. She was one of the first people to welcome us to the neighborhood. She shared her love of gardening with me, along with Berta and Leighton, when the three of them sponsored me to become a member of the garden club. We all know she is now in a better place, cracking jokes and playing bridge.
