November 20, 1927 - October 21, 2016

Stephen J. Stephens, Sr.

Stephen J. Stephens, Sr., 88, of Savannah, died on Friday, October 21, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. A memorial service will be held Saturday, at 11:00 am, in the Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel. He was born November 20, 1927 in Jacksonville, Florida by the late Ethel and George W. Stephens.  He attended the University of GA and was an Army veteran of World War II where he participated in mop up efforts in Italy and Yugoslavia. He enjoyed flying small planes and experienced many adventures. For more than 30 years, Steve and his brother, Paul, operated Stephens Tire Co. He’s remembered as an honest, dignified businessman with many longtime friends and clients. Steve was a member of the Lions Club, Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship and Ogeechee Sailing Club. He sailed up the east coast to the Hudson River and down through the Caribbean Islands.  When he wasn't sailing, he stayed busy working on his boats and many projects. He kept in shape, and until recently would occasionally be seen biking  from Vernon View to Tubby's where his sailing buddies gathered at their regular weekday lunches. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, "Bobbi" Barbara Ann; sons, Stephen J. Stephens, Jr. (Patricia), George Scott Stephens (Ann); daughter, Stephanie Stephens Quillen (Donald), step-daughter Penny Smith Laemmerhirt (Dr. Georg), step-son Stan Collins (deceased); three grandchildren, Jeremy Bonin, Jessica Bonin, Joshua Bonin;  3 great-grandchildren.  Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Dr., Savannah, GA 31406.
