Celebrating the life of
Etta Huffman Hannaford
June 22, 1925 - October 26, 2016
Etta Huffman Hannaford passed away on October 26, 2016 at the age of 91. She was born in Charleston, SC to Samuel Jacob and Etta Infinger Huffman. She graduated from Murray Vocational High School and was proud to be a Charlestonian. Her ancestry could be traced back to the Revolutionary War.
She married Thomas V. Hannaford, Jr. in June 1948. They spent many years in Montgomery, Alabama but always returned to Charleston for the summers.
They moved to Savannah, Georgia in 1965 where she worked as a civil service employee at Ft. Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield until her retirement.
Despite working full time and raising 3 children, she never passed up a chance to be active. She loved to shop, belonged to many civic and women’s clubs and played bridge every change she could. She and Tom could be seen most Saturday nights with their friends dancing at Johnny Harris. Etta loved to attend parties such as Lillian and Marie’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and she rarely left before the end. She loved to travel and took trips around the country with her sister Bettie and her husband John in their RV. With Etta – all that needed to be said was “Do you want to…” and her bags were packed.
After her husband’s death, she continued playing bridge, progressive rummy and mahjong. It was hard to keep up with her even at 91.
She and Tom raised their family at Epworth United Methodist Church and later joined Independent Presbyterian Church. She continued to be active in the church especially enjoying The Tuesday Morning Circle and the evening services at Pt. Pleasant. She had many friends in the church that looked out for her and helped her attend the many events.
She moved to Savannah Commons and continued her active lifestyle. She was part of a special group who were referred to as the “The Golden Girls” because they were such good friends.
She is survived by her 3 children Tom V Hannaford, III (Carolyn) of Savannah, Donna Hannaford Nickerson (William) of Sugarland, Texas and Scott Keith Hannaford (Ruby) of Fresno, California; 7 grandchildren, Christy Connor (Scott), Holly Hannaford, John Hannaford, Brian Hannaford, Sean Hannaford (Laura), Phillip Hannaford, and Daniel Hannaford; 4 great grandchildren Matthew and Brandon Connor, Zoey and Remi Hannaford. She is also survived by her sister Bettie Collins (John) of Houston, Texas, and Brother Samuel Huffman of Seattle, Washington.
A visitation will be held at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday November 3, 2016.
The funeral service will be at 1 pm, Friday Nov 4, 2016 at Independent Presbyterian Church followed by a graveside service at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC at 4:30 p.m.
Remembrances may be made to Independent Presbyterian Church, PO Box 9266, Savannah, GA 31412 or Boys Farm, PO Box 713, Newberry, SC 29108.
