Celebrating the life of
Mitchell Bunker Smith
October 14, 1979 - October 05, 2019
See below for info on an education fund for Mitchell
Mitchell Bunker Smith, of Valona, Georgia, died Friday, October 4, 2019. He is survived by his beautiful children, Ben Smith (15) and Jack Smith (15), of Darien, Georgia, and Holden Smith (9) of Atlanta, Georgia.
Born with a sense of adventure in Anchorage, Alaska, and reared in Pike County, Georgia, Mitchell spent most of his adult life on the coast of Georgia, son to Sherron Smith and Tommy Smith (deceased) and brother to Kate Venugopal of Oakland, California. Mitchell’s big heart and love for life was shared with and felt by many, and his natural love for people gave him a unique zeal for others. He loved his children above all else. Mitchell was generous. He was loving. He was compassionate. He was adventurous. He was gentle. And for most of his life, he had very sound instincts.
Growing up in Pike County, he stretched his legs long in Georgia’s piedmont, where he was active in scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, and formed lasting friendships. He attended Athens Y Camp the summers of his youth. In his teen years, he was an avid kayaker and outdoorsman, with a love and respect for nature.
In high school, Mitchell dabbled in sports, but was never much the competitive type. He probably would have preferred just hanging out and getting to know the guys on the other team rather than competing with them on a court or a field. Also, while in high school on the Georgia coast, Mitchell’s love for nature and the outdoors led him to become a better fisherman and boatman.
He attended the University of Georgia, in Athens, where he built lasting friendships, pursued endless adventure, and in the process earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Economics and Management. During his college years, he returned to Alaska for a summer job to reconnect with his roots, hiking tall mountains, paddling big rivers, experiencing the northern lights for his first time, and at the end of that summer dipping into the freezing glacial waters of the Kenai with his sister and father then building a fire to warm up in a rustic sweat lodge.
Mitchell was a people person, through and through; he loved his friends. In college, he organized memorable trips to share the Georgia coast that he loved - winter solstice beach campouts on Sapelo Island and canoe trips down the Suwannee River.
After college, he pursued jobs in renewable energy and environmental management and found time to squeeze in flying lessons, having always been fascinated by flight. He had a chapter traveling the country erecting data transmission towers for possible wind farm sites. Another chapter was spent working in solar panel manufacturing. He started and ran his own erosion control company for several years.
Mitchell championed the shrimping industry in McIntosh County, Georgia. He wanted to help propel the product of sweet Georgia shrimp and the people who brought it to the shores into the prominence he thought they deserved. He had big ideas. He started with a truck, and grew a small-scale distribution company, sharing his passion for shrimp at farmers markets and restaurants across Macon and Atlanta. He never stopped thinking of ways to strengthen the supply chain.
For Mitchell, metrics for success were found in discovery: a turtle shell, a feather, a labradorite stone, a deliciously prepared meal (one he had prepared himself), the view of the marsh from his front steps, or the view from a mountain top on a hike. His richest discovery was the joy he found in his amazing children – on his road less traveled.
Mitchell will be remembered when the breeze blows strong and his love for his children will follow them every day for the rest of their lives.
There will be a gathering at Mitchell’s house in Valona on Friday, October 11. Drop in 6pm-8pm.
Mitchell's memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Magnolia Cemetery in Concord, GA. Those who can are invited to join the family for lunch at the Concord Café following the service.
For those who desire, a contribution to Mitchell's children's education fund may be made at:

I wanted to share a few stories of how I knew and grew to love Mitchell Bunker Smith. I met Mitchell back in the fall of 1998. We were freshman enrolling at the University of Georgia. I’ll never forget seeing that big ‘ole grizzly bear walk into a room and light it up with an even bigger smile. He was a jovial soul, ever approachable, always kind hearted. He and I quickly became good friends, as he did with so many others. It was hard not to like what Michell had to offer. For us college life was mostly care free, with a dash of responsibility. We were young, happy, energetic, a little impulsive and a lot of stupid. It was great. The only thing I was concerned about was keeping my grades respectable, and for Bunker (at least early in his college career) that wasn’t even on his radar. During our sophomore year, we lived together in a run down, beer laden house on Hall Street . That old rickety shack was a stones throw away from Brumby Hall, an all girls dormitory. Mitchell took it upon himself to remind me daily, that we did in fact live near and all girls dorm; as if it would have slipped my mind. Our second semester, the joys of college life tipped the scales a little too far and landed him on double secret academic probation. While on probation his dad (R.I.P Mr. Tommy Smith), rightfully so, insisted he get a job. Within a week Mitchell was flipping eggs as a short order cook at the Mayflower, an old breakfast nook, in downtown Athens. One day after his a shift, we were sitting in his room back on Hall Street passing the time. He was describing in grave detail how to properly flip an egg without breaking the yolk; as the not so subtle odor of 10 day old laundry wafted up from behind him. The conversation quickly escalated from trivial, to serious, to existential. He was sincere about getting back into school because he knew he let his parents down. He felt their disappointment and wanted to graduate for them more than anything. He committed to finishing what he had started and rededicated himself to academics (he later received his degree with a major in Environmental Economics and Management). I don’t recall the specifics of the philosophical dilemma that ensued, but Mitchell always reflected on the transience of life. That everything will eventually come to an end. I guess that came from his love of nature. He understood it’s cycles, very well. He was acutely aware of our impermanence. To me, that was the reason he didn’t care about differential calculus. He knew someone else, who was passionate about mathematics would figure it out. Mitchell was passionate about the people around him, about nature and adventure. He wanted to live a full life and I whole heartedly believe that is exactly what he did. Mitchell wasn’t the most responsible person in the world. He was far from infallible. He made mistakes. He had his share of disappointments. On some scale of relativity it’s nothing we all haven’t experienced. What made Mitchell Bunker Smith so special was that he never shied away from being Mitchell Bunker Smith. He was caring, loving, genuine. He was a big man with an enormous heart and the kindest of souls. He was a gamer, always up for a good time. To me - he would light up a room with his presence. I loved seeing him. I looked forward to hearing his laugh and listening to his stories and adventures. Some might say, he went too far in his pursuit of happiness. No matter how melancholic it may be, that was Mitchell and he was always going to stay true to his nature. For the longest time I thought he was larger than life, and now he is. Even though he moved on from this world, I will never forget him and I will always bring a part of him with me. Rest In Peace Mitchell. I love you and miss you dearly. John DiCarlo

Dear Smith family, I knew Mitchell when we were in high school together at Darlington. I had the fortune of coming to Darian,GA for a long weekend with him and some of our other friends, and I remember his kindness and certainly that of his parents and sister. I remember we tried to surf, but there were no waves. I remember staying up late on porch. The road trip there from Rome was epic, filled with so much laughter, music, and feelings of teenage freedom. In Rome, all of our friends spent a good deal of time together hanging out at “The Strain’s house”, and just experiencing a great deal of joy and connection. I will remember his beautiful heart and his kindness always. We lost touch over the years and reconnected briefly about two years ago. I am so sorry for your incredible loss. What a gorgeous soul he has and we were all so blessed to share in it. I am sending you all so much warmth, ease and love. With tremendous appreciation for Mitchell’s life and being, Ashleigh

Harold and I are deeply saddened as we reflect on our last conversations with Mitchell. He has always been such a polite, respectful young man with a beautiful smile, kind words, and a positive outlook. Mitchell was one of my favorite first graders and a good friend to my daughter in Kindergarten. I am happy and proud that he had a beautiful and productive life, but oh so sad it was cut short. I know he will be missed terribly by all who knew and loved him. This comes as a big shock to our family. From the mother of the little boy named Molly who Mitchell befriended in Kindergarten. A find memory of ours. God Bless.
