Celebrating the life of
Flossie Irene Rice Harrison
October 22, 1920 - November 09, 2016
Flossie Irene Rice Harrison, 96, entered into eternal rest November 9, 2016. She was born October 22, 1920, in LaGrange, Georgia, to her parents, Russell Morgan Rice and Gertrude Hearn Rice, as the oldest of seven children. In 1932 she moved with her family to Augusta, where she lived for 77 years before moving to Savannah to live with her daughter and son-in-law in 2009.
She is pre-deceased by her husband Bernard, daughter Joan, her parents, four sisters, and two brothers. “Ms. Flossie” is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Skip Watson, her son Thomas Bernard Harrison, her granddaughter Stacy Watson, and great-granddaughter Rebekah Watson. Also, by cousins, nieces and nephews, and many friends.
She was a retired floral designer and specialized in designing wedding bouquets for many Augusta brides. Ms. Flossie and her late husband Bernard loved to dance, and their home in Augusta was always open to family and friends. She had many “adopted” kids (friends of her children) and they continued to love her and claim her as their “second mom.” She was a member of the “Greatest Generation” and most certainly was a “Steel Magnolia.”
For more than 50 years, Ms. Flossie and her husband were active members of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church, where she taught Primary III Sunday School. One of her students grew up to become pastor of their church.
An avid baseball fan, she loved the Atlanta Braves and played in the Augusta Softball League until the age of 20. She loved Elvis Presley, Johnny Carson, game shows, the beach, her sewing club, and most especially anything chocolate. She was known for her generosity and kindness; her keen sense of humor and culinary skills; and she always saw the best in people, even when others could not.
The family would like to particularly thank our Mary Lee, who cared for both our Mother and Father with kindness, faithfulness, patience, understanding, and friendship. And our deepest appreciation to the loving and caring staff at Thunderbolt (Tara) Transitional Care and Rehabilitation.
A memorial service and celebration will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 19 at Crawford Avenue Baptist Church (Daniel Chapel) in Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Crawford Avenue Baptist Church, 507 Crawford Ave., Augusta, GA 30904. The family also asks that in honor of our Mother and those who knew and loved her, take time to enjoy your families and friends; and to always show kindness and love to others, as she did throughout her lifetime. We will miss you, Mother… “Sweet Dreams!”
Blessings on you, Nancy, Skip, and family...devoted and loving beyond words. And for you, Ms. Flossie...thanks for the example you set and light you shone on so many. Rest in God's eternal peace...
