Celebrating the life of
Edward Anthony Fitzgerald III
October 10, 1950 - November 15, 2016
Edward A. Fitzgerald III of Savannah, Georgia passed away on November 15th, 2016, at age 66, after a four-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was a Savannah native, born to parents Edward A. ‘Bubba’ Fitzgerald Jr. and Ethel Lavinia King Fitzgerald. He is preceded in death by both parents Bubba and Lavinia, and his sister, Susan F. Parker.
Edward was a loving husband, father, brother, and son. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary J. Fitzgerald, his son Ted Fitzgerald (Kyle Roosevelt), his sisters Colleen (Bill) Henry and Peggy (Troy) Waters, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Edward started his career working as a tugboat captain on the Savannah River. His life led him to several other careers but he finished and retired from Savannah Bar Pilot Association after many years of service. He enjoyed many hobbies which included spending time on the water, visiting the gun range, taking rides in his beloved ERA Cobra, and most of all, spending time with his wife and son.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully encourages a donation to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (http://alz.org).

I've knew Ed over half of my life. A hearty soul with a quick wit who knew a little about everything. I began working with him in 1999 until his retirement. Ed never held back his feelings on any subject and would often share his knowledge and offer words of encouragement. He loved his family, his country and had a range of interests some of which we shared.. I am grateful to have known Ed and a better person for having known him. Gone too soon.

When I learned the news of Ed's passing this morning, the sadness came over me like storm clouds on a hot summer afternoon. I was introduced to him when I joined the ATCO family aka ATLANTIC TOWING COMPANY, in January 1974. I must admit, my first impression of Ed, was a free spirit, with a pony tail right out of Woodstock. I quickly learned however, he was a straight up,and no nonsense kind of guy. He was also very, very talented. To this day, I still claim, that nobody could make a tugboat dance like Capt.Ed. I once rode along with him,and the late Capt.Myatt, on board the container ship Verrazzono Bridge,as Ed was considering docking ships. Even Capt.Myatt remarked to me,as he let Ed turn and dock this large vessel, that it seemed effortless and that Ed had a natural ability for this line of work. I don't think Ed ever realized just how talented he truly was. He was unselfish, and taught me,as well as many others, his tricks of the trade. I often thanked him when we would run into each other. I will not forget him. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. I am so sorry for your loss. John McCarthy
