Heyward Grooms
October 22, 1925 - November 18, 2016
SAVANNAH - Heyward Grooms, age 91, went to be with his heavenly Father on November 18, 2016 while at Ogeechee Area Hospice.
Born in Columbia, SC, he went into the US Navy at seventeen and served four years during WWII. After serving, he came to Savannah and worked at the Union Bag & Paper mill and began building houses on the side. His work was his passion and he quickly became a highly-respected general contractor in Savannah of custom homes for over fifty years (Heyward Grooms Construction Company). He was also a dedicated member of Bible Baptist Church for just as many years.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty-six years, Savannah native Elaine Johnson Grooms; his eight children - Barbara (Richard) Magnole, Eddie (JoAnn) Grooms, Janet (Jim) Gervase, Sharon Dempsey, JoAnn (Alan) Hagenbuch, Stacy (Clint) Zimmerman, Kathy Engle and Holley Heyward Grooms. He is also survived by many grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation 10:00am-12:00pm and funeral service at 12:00pm Monday November 21 at Fox & Weeks, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive. Interment is private at Bonaventure Cemetery.
