Celebrating the life of

Al Sharpe

January 01, 1923 - November 30, 2016

Al Sharpe

Allison R. "Al" Sharpe

Allison R. “Al” Sharpe passed away peacefully, on Thursday, November 30, 2016, at Candler Hospital, after a brief illness.  He was 93.

Al was born in Wayne County, Georgia, on November 1, 1923. He graduated from Wayne County High School in 1941, and in 1942, he joined the US Army Air Corps, where he served for two years in Italy during WWII, as an airplane mechanic.

After the war, he settled in Savannah, where he met Mary Futral, and they married in 1948.  During his long and active life in Savannah, Al established an auto-parts business, which became known to mechanics and individuals all over town as “the” place to shop for auto and marine parts.

Al became a Master Mason (Acacia Lodge, #452) in 1958, and in 1972, went on to “walk the burning sands” as a Shriner, serving for many years in the Clown Unit and later the Greeter Unit of Alee Temple--dedicated to raising funds to support Shriner’s Hospitals.

Another civic passion for Al was the Exchange Club of Chatham County, and later the Exchange Club of Savannah.  Al received his 50-year membership award last year, from the Savannah Exchange Club.  During those 50 years, he served in many capacities to help raise funds for needy children.  He loved helping others through charitable work, especially if there was a party, festival, dance or cook-out involved!

Those who knew him remember his passion for boating and fishing.  He also loved to bring home his catch and fry them with hushpuppies for supper.  He kept a beautiful yard, and loved to mow and trim to perfection.   He was on his lawn tractor, mowing the grass, just a few weeks before he passed away!

Al was predeceased by his parents, Mary Morgan Sharpe and Abram R. Sharpe; his wife of 64 years, Mary Futral Sharpe; and two sisters, Elsie Sharpe Truett, and Mary Sharpe Banister.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Charles Whitfield of Savannah.

Also, one brother, Wyman H. Sharpe of Savannah, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Savannah, GA.

Remembrances may be sent to The Morris Slotin Fund, Alee Temple, Savannah, GA; or St. John’s Church,  One East Macon St., Savannah, GA 31401

Visitation will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at Fox & Weeks, Islands Chapel.  Graveside service will follow at 11:00 a.m., December 6, 2016, at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Family of Al Sharp. If you knew Al Sharp then, you knew a man that was a true gentleman and a scholar in his own right. Al, was not your everyday Joe! When you were around Al you were electrified with enthusiasm, laughter, fun and compassion. This was a man that truly traveled through hot sands of life and made the best of it. Al, will be remembered for his charm, sense of humor and infectious smile. Yet, it is truly Al’s undying love and devotion to his family that defines the man we have known, respected and loved. Even though there are no profound or clever words that can accurately depict what an immense; person Al was, we will always remember that enthusiastic, outgoing character that he possessed. Proud to have been his friend.

We are so sad to hear of Al's passing. He was a fixture on Betz Creek Rd. We loved seeing him on his lawn mower, picking up mail or the paper or mowing the lawn! He always had a big wave and HI to us as we passed by his house. We will miss his sweet soul!
