Celebrating the life of
Richard "Mike" Cook
February 28, 1947 - February 28, 2017
On February 28, 1947, Mike Cook, known to many as Cookie, was born to Elizabeth Dorsey Cook and John S. Cook. Exactly 70 years later, on February 28, 2017, Mike went to his Heavenly home, surrounded all day by friends and family at Hospice Savannah. His peaceful passing was so appropriate for Mike, who was a kind, loving, and humble man who never met a stranger. His wealth of friendships came second only to the love he had for his family.
Mike had a passion for fishing, especially for in-shore trout. Many of his friendships were formed at Hogan’s Marina and Joey’s Bait House, where sharing fishing tales, but not fishing holes, was a favorite pastime. Mike participated, and won, many fishing tournaments and was a past member of the Savannah Sports Fishing Club.
Retired after 40 years of service with Road Sprinkler Fitters L.U. 669 UA, Mike maintained close friendships with many of the men with whom he had worked over the years. His co-workers held him in high esteem and were extremely saddened by his passing. Mike was preceded in death by his father, John S. Cook.
He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth D. Milligan: mother-in-law, Julia Proctor; daughters, Kim Fields (John), Lizzie Cook, and Gina Sheriff; grandchildren, Kirsten Eve Fields, Vincent Todd, and Nikki Reichner; sisters, Dianne DeGarady (Steve) and Belinda Drucker (Chris); the love of his life, Judy Quinney, and too many special friends to mention all of them! Many aunts, uncles and cousins complete Mike’s Circle of Love.
The family would like to thank Dr. Barry Luskey and his staff at Summitt Cancer Care, especially Aaron, Daylin and Zoe, whom Mike learned to love. Also to be thanked is the staff and volunteers of Hospice Savannah. A special thank you to Jon and Nicole for assisting in Mike’s health care and being with Mike until the end.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Island Chapel from 12:00-2:00, with the service immediately following. Interment: Hillcrest Abbey East.
Pall Bearers are Gary Dorsey, Sr., Gary Dorsey, Jr., Matt Dorsey, Billy Dorsey, Sr., Billy Dorsey, Jr., and Donnie Thompson. Honorary Pall Bearers are all of Mike’s friends from Hogan’s Marina and Joey’s Bait House.
