Celebrating the life of

Betty Chaplin Yonke

September 26, 1929 - May 04, 2017

Betty Chaplin Yonke

Betty Carolyn Chaplin Yonke was born at her Mother’s & Father’s home on September 26, 1929. She attended Savannah (then Commercial) High School. After graduation, she met George Yonke while he was in Savannah visiting family who lived next door to Betty’s parents’ home. Betty & George were married on June 8, 1947 & lived in Birmingham, AL, for a short period while George was in the Army. They returned to Savannah after George was discharged from the Army, built their home here and raised their only child, Carolyn (now married to Dennis Pierce).

Betty was predeceased by her parents, her husband George Yonke, and her sister & brother-in-law, Helen & Raymond Murcell. She is survived by Carolyn & Dennis Pierce of Tybee Island, a Grand-bird (Bonky), a Grand-dog (Enzo), and her niece Pam Murcell Cullen & her husband Pat Cullen. Betty always said, “You shouldn’t have children or pets if you can’t spoil ‘em rotten!” All those she loved can attest to her ability to accomplish this!

Betty loved to feed the wild birds & squirrels living in her yard. She was an excellent wife, homemaker and Mother. Betty was an avid & quite accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook. She always baked yummy birthday cakes for family members. Fried chicken was one of her specialties! Betty was always busy at something, whether in the kitchen, in the house, in the yard, or doing for others, which earned her the nickname of “Energizer Betty,” from her son-in-law, Dennis. Betty sang in the choir at First Baptist Church in Savannah for most of her adult life and also served as a Deacon there for a several years.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Savannah. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery.

I really am sorry for your loss. Jehovah is a God of comfort and his word the Bible offers much encouragement from him. (Isaiah 25:8) Yes he will do away with death and all things that distress us! May positive memories fill your heart and mind through this difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to Betty's family . She was such a dear southern lady, always a smile on her face . She was a true and faithful servant of the Lord. Cherish your memories.

- Louise Ferguson, Savannah, Ga. 31405,

My sincerest condolences go out to your family, it's never easy losing someone in death. May you take comfort in God's promise found at Revelation 21:4, which says "he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” This verse brought me peace when I experienced loss, I hope it can do the same for you. May the memories you have give you strength during this difficult time.
