I enjoyed reconnecting with Cousin Joe by phone in July of 2015 after last seeing him about 1983 when I was 14. I'd been blessed many times to see y'alls' parents Susan and Woody when they'd join my parents (Allison "Peppy" and June Goodwin) at Atlantic Beach. My Dad loved his cousin Susan and her fun-loving nature! I was really touched hearing about Joe's kindness and care for his parents. Sure enough, the few phone calls I had with Joe the last two years were upbeat and full of humor, even though I am sure he and Sandi were having a rough time of it. Thank you for this example which I'll treasure the rest of my life. To Sandi, Joe's brothers and children, all the friends - my thoughts and prayers are for deep comfort and real hope as you grieve. Love and many hugs, Rebecca Goodwin-Feldmann

Growing up in Red Springs we all knew each other. Joe was my older brothers age, but we all hung out. Another of our Red Springs family has gone to be with god. My condolences to the family. Waverly McNeill, Summerville S.C.

I am from Red Springs too and was in the same high school class as Joe. He was a good and fun loving guy. Joe was a gifted athlete that you always wanted on your team at school or elsewhere. We went to the same church and our families were friends as are most families in a small town. He was always full of energy and went out of his way for others. I know he will be missed by those closest to him. My wife Barbara and I wish you comfort and healing, and want you to know our prayers are with your family.

Joe was a kind, loving man, who's greatest joy was his family. He could fill a room with his laughter. He will be greatly missed by those that knew him. I want to send hugs and prayers to his family in this time of sorrow. Love you all, Casie

Joe and Hillis were friends of my brother Rusty and myself. We grew up together, played and laughted together and had a lot of fun and tried to stay out of trouble. Sometimes we were successful. Joe was a great athlete and he and Hillis were crazy fast running with a football. So long for now old friend until we again soon meet. Jay McArthur

Our hearts are heavy over this, but filled with love and prayers for you who will be there. We regret that we cannot join you. We shall cherish the memory of Joe's high spirits and determination for what he set his hand to. We shall cherish the memory of the great family he and Sandi formed and shared with us. We shall ever thank God for how he and Sandi stepped forward in the care of his parents.
