Harry E. Owens, 96, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at his home. He was born September 1, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY, but lived in Savannah from infancy.

Harry was twice a cancer survivor, a testimony to his perseverance and to the knowledge and skill of his excellent doctors.  He gave the most credit to the multitude of prayers offered up for him.

He led an active life.  He was a veteran of World War II.  He was employed by Union Camp Corporation for over 41 years, retiring as a Planner Analyst.  He built his home on Talahi Island, then a cabin in the mountains of North Carolina where he and his wife spent their summers.

Harry and Dot were married 57 years. He and Dot square danced for almost 30 years, during which he formed his own club, the Island Swingers.  He resigned as caller only when his voice began to fail, but continued with their favorite activity of square dancing.  They traveled to all but two of the states of the United States and to many foreign countries, and spent January in warm Mexico for years.

Harry was a long-time member of Grace Presbyterian Church.  He attended Glennville Wesleyan Church, Glennville, North Carolina, in the summer months.  He was a person who not only maintained a wonderful relationship with his family, his friends, and his neighbors, but with his Lord as well.  He was an avid reader of his bible until his eyes would no longer allow him that pleasure.  He was always singled out to bless the food at any gathering and could be counted on to expound on questions pertaining to scripture.  In his youth he earned a Local Preachers License in the Methodist Church, but chose not to pursue this as a vocation.

He was predeceased by his son Harry E. Owens, Jr. He is survived by his wife, sons Philip (Kathy) of Guyton and Joseph (Linda) of Port Wentworth, daughters Bonnie Ray (Wayne) of Florida, and Jonee Stewart of Atlanta, and stepson Mitchell Elliott (Allison) of Texas.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at Grace Church of the Islands. He will be buried in a private ceremony and laid to rest in historic Laurel Grove Cemetery where his wife will one day rest beside him.
