Celebrating the life of
Doris White Burkett
May 28, 1934 - May 27, 2017
Doris Lillian White Burkett (1934-2017)
Doris Lillian White Burkett, 82, of Savannah, GA, passed away on May 27, 2017. Under hospice care at Savannah Square Senior Living Community, she was patiently waiting for her next birthday. As fate would have it, she was just 8 hours short of her 83rd birthday. Doris was born in Gilkey, NC and was preceded in death by her father, William Roland White, and her mother, Dovie Louisa Koone White. She was one of 13 children born to Roland and Dovie. Doris was a graduate of the University of North Carolina with a degree in nursing, and was an RN. In her later years of life in Savannah, Doris was a long time volunteer of the ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve) locally, and was one of the earliest volunteers of USO Savannah.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Edgar Monroe Burkett, of Savannah. Doris was also blessed to have two wonderful daughters with Ed, Leslie Burkett Bush (Mitchell) of Savannah, and Lori Gay Burkett of Suwanee, GA. In addition, Doris was also the grandmother of Kempton & Maren Bryan, of Suwanee, and grandmother of Wesley Bush (Jolly) of Savannah. Doris also leaves behind 3 sisters, Reba Conklin, Sharmel Paschal, and Hazel Quate, and her brother in law, David R. Burkett and his wife Dot. Doris also leaves behind her long time family caregiver, Renei Smith, of Savannah.
The family would also like to express thanks to Mr. Keith Munger, and his wonderful staff at Spanish Oaks Hospice, for being with Doris in her final days. Special thanks to Tonya McLeod and Ashlee Griffin, of Spanish Oaks Hospice, as well, for their support during the final hours. And last but not least, the family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Savannah Square for the unbelievable care they provided Doris over the last several months. The family was appreciative of the daily prayers of Nurse Mary Loper at Savannah Square and for the help of Nurse Gigi Roque. The care that these two groups offered Doris provided great solace in her fight with Alzheimer’s.
Funeral services will be private. However, a memorial visitation will be held June 10th, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to USO Savannah or to the ESGR, 12 Commodore Court, Savannah, GA 31410.

My sincerest condolences go out to your family, it's never easy losing someone in death. May you take comfort in God's promise found at Revelation 21:4, which says "he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” This verse brought me peace when I experienced loss, I hope it can do the same for you. May the memories you have give you strength during this difficult time.
