Celebrating the life of

Julia Foster Clanton

August 05, 1927 - July 07, 2017

Julia Foster Clanton

On Friday, July 7, 2017, Julia Elizabeth Foster Clanton passed away at Hospice Savannah at age eighty-nine.

Julia was the third child of seven born to Fred Alonzo Foster and Ruth Benson Foster on August 5, 1927 in Savannah, Georgia.  She grew up in Savannah and attended First Presbyterian Church as a child.

Julia worked for the Adjutant General’s Office in the Records Department during World War II at the age of seventeen. In her words “to contribute to the war effort.”

On September 8, 1945 Julia married John Edward Clanton, her childhood nemesis who became the love of her life.  They were married sixty-six years when her loving husband and best friend passed away on March 31, 2011.

Julia was employed by the Savannah Gas Company and in 1966 went to work for Southeastern Maritime Company.  She began her career there as a clerk typist and eventually became supervisor of the company’s billing department.  She retired after twenty-six years there in August, 1992.

Julia served as the vice-president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 135.  She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Julia is survived by one brother, William G. Foster, and one sister, Nancy F. Zarich, and three daughters, Karen Traver (Jimmy), Cheryl Barker (Jim), and Brenda Salter (Mac).  She is also survived by seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Julia enjoyed the beach and boating, traveling to Hawaii, cruising the Caribbean, and visiting Mexico.  She was an avid reader.  She loved to dance, sew, crochet, and cook, all of which she did extremely well.  Julia loved her family and was for them a paragon of strength.  She lived her life for others and always had a loving, optimistic attitude.  She will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel, on Whitemarsh Island from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, followed immediately by the funeral service at 11:00 am.  The service will be officiated by Pastor Peter J. Hartmann of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church or Hospice Savannah.

GUEST BOOK

My deepest sympathy to Julia's family. In the book of Psalms, King David, who went through numerous hardships, revealed what helped him to cope. In prayer to God, David said,"I am fond of your commandments, Yes, I love them. Remember your word to your servant, Through which you give me hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, For your saying has preserved me alive"( Psalms 119:47, 49, 50 ). You, too, can find comfort and hope in God's word.

Blessings of peace and love to your family during this time of sorrow and grief for the absence of your love one. I know she will be missed but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all those who had the honor to know such a wonderful gracious lady.

Dear Family of Julia Clanton: I was saddened to read of the loss of your loved one. I personally experienced the grief of losing my loved ones. However, there is comfort to know the Holy Scriptures (Rev 21:4) gives the assurance that God will end death, pain and sorrow. I hope this brief message brings comfort to you and your family.
