Henry Earl Harris

January 28, 1936 - October 21, 2026

Henry Earl Harris

Henry Earl Harris, 90, passed away peacefully at Candler Hospital on October 21st after a brief illness.  Henry was born in Fort Valley, GA, on January 28th 1936.  After graduating from Fort Valley High School, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology for his undergraduate and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering.

In April of 1962, he married Eloise Sadler, and they were happily married for 55 years until her passing in 2018.  Henry and Eloise initially lived in Atlanta, GA, and Chapel Hill, NC.  They moved to Savannah in 1966, so Henry could start his long career as  Head of the Chemistry and Physics Department at Armstrong State College.   Henry enjoyed a long and distinguished career in academia.  During his time at Armstrong, Henry inspired countless young minds and helped shape the futures of many doctors, scientists, and engineers.  He believed in supporting his former students.  He would use them as his dentist, veterinarian, and physician.

In 2002, Henry retired as the Assistant Dean of Arts and Sciences from Armstrong.   Henry, never one to slow down, enjoyed following the stock market, working in the yard, and baking his famous Chex mix and granola.   He enjoyed going out on the boat with his family and cheering on his grandchildren at any sporting event he could attend.  Henry always had a passion for learning and loved to give advice whenever asked.

Henry was an active member at White Bluff Methodist Church, Southbridge Community Church, and Compassion Christian Church.   When he could no longer make it to church, he enjoyed his Bible Study with Dr. D at Legacy Assisted Living.

In addition to his parents, Henry was predeceased by his wife, Eloise S. Harris; his brother, Robert L. Harris, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; his sister, George Ann Seymour of Fort Valley, Ga; and nephew Andy Seymour of Fort Valley, Ga.  He is survived by his son, Robert William Harris (Carrie) of Atlanta, Ga, and a daughter, Ellen Harris Wilson (Eddie), three grandchildren: Bowen Harris, Drew Wilson, and Sadler Wilson, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Legacy at Savannah Quarters, where Henry lived the past few years, the doctors, nurses, and staff at Candler Hospital, and Spanish Oaks Hospice.

In keeping with Henry’s request, there will be no memorial service.  To honor Henry’s memory, do something kind for someone or spend time with a loved one.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Henry’s memory to Compassion Christain Church, 55 Al Henderson Blvd., Savannah, GA  31419.
