Vincent Joseph Grevemberg

(SAVANNAH) - Vincent Joseph Grevemberg, age 73, passed away on August 24, 2026 at home after a long and valiant journey with cancer.
Vincent was born in Chatham County in Savannah, Georgia, on July 7, 1953 to Milton Vincent and Nel Baran Grevemberg. He grew up on 52nd Street in the Parkside Neighborhood of Savannah, enjoying years of fun and mischief with the other Parkside boys. He attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1971. He then graduated from the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!!!) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1977.
After graduating from University of Georgia, Vincent was hired as an “Ombudsman” with the Chatham County Engineering Department in 1977. He served in positions of ever increasing responsibility culminating as the Senior Engineer for the Department of Engineering. Vincent helped to create Savannah Area Geographic Information Systems (SAGIS) and was recognized as an expert on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He retired from Chatham County Department of Engineering in 2008 with over 31 years of service. Over the years of his service, he received numerous awards, commendations, and accolades from supervisors, peers, and the public alike.
Vincent was an avid tennis player, enjoying in competing in league tennis and playing on Tuesday morning games with his close friends. He was a member of the U.S. Tennis Association for many years and competed in numerous Georgia State Champion tournaments. He also enjoyed golfing, even if he was not a very good player. His favorite hobby was woodworking. He prided himself on making many unique handmade gifts for his family.
Vincent loved boating and the water. He cherished the many exotic trips throughout the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans he took with his wife over the 43 years of their marriage.
He was a communicant of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father and his sister, Helen Patricia Grevemberg.
Vincent is survived by his wife, Karleen Moody Grevemberg; his sister, Gayle Arberg and her husband, Kenneth; brother-in-law, Walter Scott Moody; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and members of the dinner club he enjoyed for over 40 years.
Following cremation, a private interment of ashes will occur at Bonaventure Cemetery.

Vincent and Karleen have been our friends for over 40 years and were fellow members of " the supper club". Vincent shared our mutual interest in rocks and minerals being a fellow graduate of geology. We enjoyed living two docks down on the Vernon river and rafting up together with other neighbors on 4th of July holidays. Vincent was always such a calm and amiable soul and a true joy to be around. I knew Vince mainly in the context of our shared interest in tennis. Over probably 30 years or more, I played with Vince on many occasions and from both sides of the net. He was always an enjoyable player, as partner or opponent. His manner was consistently evenhanded, good humored, and positive. Our tennis community and those who new him well, will miss his presence.

About two years ago, Vince and I happened to sit side-by-side at a breakfast bar after appointments with oncologists. We shared experiences about cancer treatments (he had endured longer and with continuing side effects) but spent most of our time to talk about our decades of working together at Chatham County. Vince was always one of my favorites in the County Engineer's Office—a consummate professional, always low key but dependable. Don't know whether geo-mapping, SAGIS and pictometry could have advanced in Chatham County if not for his advocacy. He and I also shared an appreciation for craftsman in woodworking. I gave him lumber to replicate railings for his Boston Whaler, because he wanted to replicate the original look. Classic Vince...authentic but so quiet and unassuming that most in the world overlooked his attention to detail and talents. Prayers for Karleen and the family. His love for her was followed by his love of waterways, tennis and travel.

Mr. Grevemberg was one of my tennis clients while I worked at Bacon Park Tennis Courts. He was always kind to me and offered a smile each time I saw him. He was a lovely person to be around and I am grateful for every ride he offered to take me to the bus stop when I got off work.
