Celebrating the life of
Cuthbert Leonard Herb
July 14, 1939 - June 17, 2026
Cuthbert “Leonard” Herb, a loving husband, devoted father, proud “Papa,” and lifelong sportsman, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026. He embraced life with a generous heart, a quick smile, and an unwavering love for his family.
Born with a natural passion for athletics and community, Leonard attended Benedictine Military School in Savannah, where he formed lifelong friendships and values that shaped the rest of his life. He was a standout multi-sport athlete and is celebrated on the BC Athletic Wall of Honor.
He went on to attend the University of Georgia, where he played football which unfortunately brought on a career ending injury, but his love for the Dawgs was never ending.
He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard and retired with an honorable discharge.
Leonard worked in the Wine and Spirit industry for 35+ years, a career that brought him the joy of traveling all over the country.
Leonard loved Tybee Island and proudly called it home for many years. He found great joy in the simple pleasures of island life—relaxing on the beach, gathering with friends for "spirited" games of bocce ball on 7th Street, and spending time by the water with those he loved most. Some of his happiest moments were spent on the beach with his grandchildren, playing in the waves, building memories in the sand, and sharing the beauty of a place that meant so much to him.
His love for sports carried him through decades of involvement. He served as a college basketball referee, umpired baseball, and coached his children with patience, pride, and a belief in doing things the right way.
Nothing, however, brought him more joy than becoming “Papa.” He cherished his seven grandchildren and recently welcomed his first great-grandchild, a blessing that lit up his final months with pure happiness. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren compete in sporting events and perform in dance recitals.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Cuthbert and Catherine Herb, and his brother, Denny Herb (Babs). He is survived by his wife, Susan; his brother, Joe (Carol); and his five children: Michael Herb (Shannon), Suzie Herb, Lenny Herb (Sarah), Scott Moeller, and John Edwards (Michelle). He was a proud “Papa” to his seven grandchildren—Heather, Donovan, Shane, Cayden, Dominic, Austin, and Sarah (CeCe)—and one great-grandchild, Levi.
He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and wholehearted dedication—to his family, to the athletes he mentored, and to every life he touched. His presence lit up every room he entered, and while he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to guide those who loved him.
Visitation will be held at Blessed Sacrament at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery.
Rest in peace Leonard. You will be missed.
