Margaret Broderick Mathews

Margaret Broderick Mathews, 87, died Friday, November 10th at home after a long illness.  Margaret was born and raised in Savannah. She attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy in 1949. She attended Mercyhurst College, Erie, PA. Margaret taught school in Savannah at St. Vincent’s Academy before she married Buddy in 1965.   Margaret was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church for twenty-two years and before that Blessed Sacrament Church.  Margaret along with raising five children volunteered extensively for Blessed Sacrament School and Church during the many years her children attended Blessed Sacrament School.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Louis C. (Buddy) Mathews and daughter, Mary Elizabeth Mathews, her parents, Dr. J. Reid Broderick and Marie Tellers Broderick, her sister, Mary “Bet” Broderick McCormick and her brother, Dr. J. Reid Broderick Jr. Surviving are her daughter, Jude E. Mathews of Boston, Massachusetts; three sons, Louis C. Mathews, III and Michael Strickland of Savannah; John P. Mathews and Karrie Mooradian Mathews of Pasadena, California; Christopher B. Mathews of Cleveland, Georgia; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with a Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in Catholic Cemetery.

The family wishes to give special thanks to her loving care givers: Angel Allen, Patsy Johnson and De’monica Allen, for all the love, support and compassion they have given Margaret and our entire family over the years.

Remembrances may be made to St. Vincent's Academy, 207 E. Liberty St., Savannah, GA 31401 or the Carmelite Monastery, 11 W. Back Road, Savannah, GA 31419.
