Celebrating the life of

George Dancu

Passed away on May 26, 2026

George Dancu

George Dancu, age 92, passed away on May 26, 2026, in Savannah, Georgia. He was born in Wheatland, Pennsylvania to John and Mary Dancu. A proud American of Romanian descent, George was raised with three brothers and two sisters in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He was a paperboy for the Sharon Herald and a caddie at the Sharon Country Club. He was a superb basketball player and an all-state football player at Sharon High School. George was admitted to the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 2004.

His prowess in football led to a scholarship to George Washington University. He played defensive and offensive end on the football team from 1951 to 1955, and he was All-Southern Conference and All-American his junior and senior years. He participated in a free agent tryout with the Washington Redskins, but by then, he had married his wife, Connie, and the NFL didn’t pay enough to support his growing family.

Upon graduating in 1956, George began a career that would take him and his family, eventually including his children Constance, John and Chris, to Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania. As one of the first salesmen in the computer industry, he consulted with defense and government contractors for Univac and RCA. He made a career transition to telecommunications as Vice President of Sales for Stromberg-Carlson in Rochester, New York. After returning to Univac in Philadelphia, he went on to become a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

George and Connie moved to Newark, Delaware, to open the Center for Cognitive and Behavior Therapy. Presented with the opportunity to share his business expertise with others, he finished out his career as a mentor at the University of Delaware’s Small Business Development Center. Weekends were relished at their beach house at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach.

When George lived in Rochester, the family had season tickets to the Buffalo Bills, fostering a life-long allegiance to the team. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed membership at Oak Hill Country Club, Philadelphia Country Club, and Oakmont Country Club. After Connie’s passing, he relocated to The Landings at Skidaway Island, Georgia. It was there that he met Nancy Caldwell. They married in 2003. George and Nancy enjoyed spending time with friends and family, joining Skidaway Island Methodist Church, participating in activities at The Landings Club (especially golf for George), watching the birds and animals feeding in their lovely backyard at The Landings, and getting away from it all at their summer home overlooking Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

George is survived by his wife Nancy, sons John and Chris (Pam), daughter Constance Maxwell (David), grandchildren Lauren (Seth), Alex (Camilla), George, Eric, Tory, Cambria, Amadea (Matt), Carolina, and Sedona, brothers Ted (Pat) and Dan (Rose), sister-in-law Sally, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother John, and sisters Rozella and Violet.

George rose from humble beginnings to build a wonderful life. He married two extraordinary women, loved sports, excelled in business, and reveled in the accomplishments of his nine grandchildren. “Well done, good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:21)

A memorial service and internment will be held at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, Savannah, Georgia, on June 5, 2026, at 11:00 am. A reception will follow in the Azalea Room at the Palmetto Club at The Landings at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Skidaway Island Methodist Church (54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411) or Hospice Savannah Foundation (P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416-0190).

GUEST BOOK

Nancy and family: I am so sorry to hear about the passing of George. He was a great gentleman. I did not know about his athletic prowess until I read the obituary. Matthew 25:21 appears to be an apropos verse to describe his life. Your family will be in our prayers. God bless. David Dickey
