Lamar Cobb Walter

Lamar Cobb Walter, age 85, passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Lamar was the son of Henry Alexander Walter and Nellie Peters Rucker Walter. He was raised in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

At the age of 11, Lamar attended the Cathedral of St. John The Divine Episcopal Choir School in New York City. Although his promising professional singing career came to an end when his voice changed, music remained an important part of his life. In 1956, during what he believed was a family vacation to Heidelberg, Germany, Lamar was surprised to learn he would remain there for a year attending the English Institute. Following his graduation from Longmeadow High School, he attended the University of Georgia in Athens, where he later earned his law degree from UGA’s Lumpkin School of Law.

In 1966, Lamar joined the law firm of Sanders, Hester, Holley in Augusta, Georgia, where he practiced law for five years. He later accepted a position with the United States Attorney’s Office in Savannah as a federal prosecutor, a role that brought him immense satisfaction and fulfillment. In 1976, he joined the admiralty law firm of Chamblee, Dubus, and Sipple, eventually becoming a partner. His lifelong love of the water made him especially well suited for trying cases involving the shipping industry. Following the death of his daughter, Ginny, in 1986, Lamar returned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where he continued serving until his retirement.

Outside of his legal career, Lamar embraced life with enthusiasm and adventure. His favorite saying was, “Life is short, so grab all the gusto you can!” An accomplished sailor, he once crossed the Atlantic aboard a 50-foot sailboat with three friends. He also enjoyed tennis, windsurfing, and skiing in New England, Colorado, Oregon, and the Alps.

Lamar was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the German Heritage Society, the Oglethorpe Club, the Savannah Yacht Club, the Cataumet Club on Cape Cod, and the St. Nickolas Society.

He is survived by Frances, his beloved wife of 61 years; his daughter, Lisa Budd (Billy); his sister, Nita McAdams (Dave); his brothers, Peter Walter and Henry Walter; and his grandchildren, Jack Singley and Ginny Singley. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ginny Walter, and by his parents.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his devoted caregivers, Edith King and Emily Sanders, for their love and compassionate care throughout his long courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. They also extend sincere thanks to Hospice Savannah for their kindness and expert care during the final months of his life.

Frances, Lisa and family. When I joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1991, Lamar and I worked together for several years and became good friends. I always valued his opinion and cherished his good nature. and friendship. He was a friend to everyone and I am sure he will be in Heaven as well. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Dear Francis, we are very sorry to hear of Lamar's passing. Your Lamar was a very special person and a friend that I have counted on more times that I can count over the past 40+ years. I will always fondly remember the many times that we sailed together (and against one another) in Savannah, Charleston, Florida and The Bahamas. May God Bless you, Lisa and your grandchildren and I am sure that Lamar is now sailing on a fair breeze reach with all of our sailing buddies that have gone to heaven ahead of us.
