George Herbert Hutson, Jr.

George Herbert Hutson, Jr.

Herb was born in Savannah on July 17, 1949, at the original Candler Hospital. He was the son of the late George Herbert Hutson, Sr. and Betty Ruth Greenway Hutson. He was raised in Savannah and remained deeply-rooted in the community he loved throughout his life.

He was married to the love of his life, Janet Henley Hutson, and this May would have marked their 56th wedding anniversary. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and devotion.

He is survived by his two children, Renee Hutson Connolly and her husband, Sean, and their daughter, Katherine in Blythewood, SC; and Michael Bradley Hutson and his wife, Victoria, and their children, Christian and Rebecca in Cumming, GA. He is also survived by his siblings, Marie Sanders and Matt Hutson, both of Rincon, GA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Louise Boyd. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Herb was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of the Islands, where his strong Christian faith guided his life. He rejoiced in sharing his faith and was especially grateful to see others come to know the Lord.

From a young age, Herb made his mark in baseball. A talented pitcher, he achieved the rare honor of playing Major League Baseball with the Chicago Cubs. He also played in the Minor Leagues within the Baltimore Orioles organization for a total of five years. In recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to athletics, he was inducted into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.

Following his playing career, Herb devoted himself to helping others develop their own talents. He generously gave pitching lessons and coached countless young athletes throughout Savannah, including at Calvary Day School, Benedictine Military School, Islands High School and with the Chain Baseball organization. He quietly refused recognition for any of this, believing his ability was a gift from God and meant to be shared. While he loved the game, his greatest joy came from seeing his players—and especially his son—succeed in the game he loved.

Herb later served as Operations Director at Paper Chemical Supply Company, where he worked for many years until his retirement. He was respected for his leadership, work ethic, and integrity.

Above all however, Herb was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and faithful friend. He was generous to a fault and made it a priority to be present for the milestones that mattered most—whether cheering from the stands, celebrating graduations, or gathering with family for holidays. Even in his later years, as he courageously battled terminal illness, his focus remained on his family and his faith.

His life was a testament to humility, service, and love, and his legacy will live on in all who knew him.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, March 9, 2026 at the Fox & Weeks Islands Chapel. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at First Baptist Church of the Islands. A reception will also take place at the church at the conclusion of the funeral service. Following the reception the burial will take place at Hillcrest Abbey West.
