Jean Elizabeth Drawdy
August 17, 1952- February 20, 2026
Jean passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, surrounded by her family and friends. Born in Savannah, GA, Jean spent most of her adult life in the Atlanta area, living in Virginia Highlands for many years and then moving to Alpharetta. She was an incredibly intelligent, adventurous and independent woman who loved her family and friends fiercely. She is preceded in death by her parents Louis Drawdy and Elizabeth Drawdy (Miller). She attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and graduated from Jenkins High School. Jean went to GA Tech at a time when females were housed on one floor in one dormitory and the ratio of men to women was 40:1. Jean earned her undergraduate and advanced degrees in Chemical Engineering at GA Tech and then went on to do doctorate work with surface science at the University of Florida.
Jean had a diverse career span working at the Georgia Crime Lab and in the Microelectronics Research Center at Georgia Tech to being a Surface Production Engineer and a Senior Solutions Consultant implementing software for hospitals.
For those who knew Jean, you knew she was a big Gator and Yellow Jackets fan. She and her family shared many years watching and going to games. She also enjoyed NASCAR, hiking the national forests, astronomy and appreciated nature. Her heart was huge and she was forever rescuing cats- who ultimately became her pets over the years. Her passion for music was immense and her ‘happy place’ was the ocean and beach. With Jean, you would always get a great story that was full of hilarious commentary.
Physics was a part of who Jean was, and although Jean was battling cancer and treatment, she made sure she made it to the Trinity Site to see where Oppenheimer did his work on the Manhattan Project. She was also thrilled to chase the solar eclipse with one of her lifelong friends in 2024.
Jean is survived by her brothers Louis Richard Drawdy, Jr. (Tracy) of Augusta, Ga, John Drawdy (Shari) of Savannah, her beloved nieces and nephew, Jessica Velasquez (Erik), Jennifer Whitt (Joshua, step-daughter Jodie), Alexandra Phillips and Johnny Drawdy. Jean also leaves behind her longtime friend and first college roommate, Karen Borman, and a special group of close friends from Savannah, Georgia Tech and Florida who she has cherished in her lifetime.
Jean was a very unique and highly intelligent person. She always have a smile. She loved her family and she made me feel like family. She never forgot me at Christmas or on my birthday and even though we haven't seen each other for years, I will miss her very much.

Jean was the most intelligent and well spoken person I have had the pleasure of calling a friend - she was passionate about science, the environment, the people and places she held dear - her cats and her Fiat X1/9! We met in Atlanta through work in 1996 and maintained a friendship through many moves, both logistical and professional. Nearly every year after I moved back to Florida she would make the journey to my homes - the missions usually involved salt water, preferably with a beach, fresh seafood and touring the University of Florida campus. Being an engineer, I especially appreciated her scientific vocabulary, which was often leveraged using multi-syllabic words (3+syllables) and phrases to describe everyday events... She was instrumental in my acquisition of high value employment positions as she wrote fabulous letters of recommendation... Words cannot describe how highly valued her genuine friendship, support and shared memories mean to me and those who were fortunate to have been part of her life. She was a fierce fighter, highly independent a loyal and loving friend - a force to be reckoned with...

Jean was a wonderful person and a terrific friend. We met at work in the early 2000's and it was my great pleasure to maintain our friendship for 20+ years. We shared so many meals, commentary on life/work, and laughs over the years it's too many to count. She always gave me great advice, in her unique way, and it always resonated with me. In one of our recent conversations she encouraged me to never forget her words of wisdom. I promised that I would not and sincerely meant it. Who could forget phrases like "eject through the canopy" when you're completely over something? That was classic Jean and absolutely unforgettable like her. I will miss my dear friend and I'm mourning her passing. I also celebrate her life because she lived it fully and on her terms. She really was a truly great person and I am honored to have been her friend.

I lived in the same neighborhood with Jean and we attended High School together. When I was in the Marines, she wrote to me very often, especially when I was in Vietnam. Her letters always uplifted and sustained me through some very dark times. Later years separated us in location but five years ago we were able to reconnect, keeping in touch frequently after that. We were able to visit the Trinity Site in New Mexico together as well as 3 Spanish Missions here in El Paso that she thoroughly enjoyed. As a dear friend, she will be greatly missed.

Jean and I were next door neighbors on Toussaint Avenue in Savannah and best friends. We unfortunately lost contact as we traveled through college and our professions but I have many fond memories of Jean. I am so sorry for her loss and know she will be missed.

Twenty years as colleagues, but truly friends. From late night customer validations and troubleshooting sessions to Alvin Ailey, Cirque du Soleil, Mother's Finest at City Winery, Peter Frampton in Alpharetta, and our favorite Bang Bang Shrimp at Bonefish. We shared so much life together. I will always cherish our Thelma and Louise synchronized retirement at 6:00 PM on Juneteenth, our collective day of freedom. Jean, I miss you deeply and only wish we had more time. Thank you for being my friend.

Jean was great woman with an awesome personality. I have known the Drawdys for years and had spent many days and nights with Jean's brothers and she would often be around. She was always pleasant and had something positive to say. I don't think I ever saw her without a smile on her face. RIP my friend!

I knew Jean at Georgia Tech when she was post-Grad and I was an undergraduate. We worked at the Microelectronics Research Center. As I struggled through my undergraduate classes, Jean always had kind, positive words and was a great friend. Over the years we kept in touch and I was constantly amazed at the things we had in common. I know she was a fighter through all her health struggles. She will be missed and condolences to her family
