Thor Metice Johansen III
January 16, 1938 - February 19, 2026
Thor Metice Johansen, III, 88, died peacefully at home, Thursday, February 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Savannah, Georgia and lived there his whole life. He was the eldest son of Thor ‘Tee’ and Theresa Johansen, II. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School before attending St. Bernard Boarding School in Cullman, Alabama. After graduation, he attended Armstrong Junior College where he played basketball. From there, he attended the University of Georgia (Class of 1963), earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.
Thor began his chemistry career at American Cyanimid, directly after graduation, which became Kemira, and eventually Kerr McGee, and he retired after 40 years. He was passionate about many things throughout his life to include the game of golf, his beloved Georgia Bulldogs, and his family, especially his grandchildren.
Thor is survived by his wife, Esther, of 65 years, and their five children: his daughter, Donna Johansen Stembridge (Milton): his son, Mark Johansen; his son, Craig Johansen (Amy Bess-Ochoa); his daughter, Christy Johansen Wiggin; his son, Scott Johansen; his grandchildren, Emily Stembridge-Smith (Cameron), Thomas Wiggin, Ronni Ochoa, Ross Wiggin, Penelope Johansen, and several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Fox & Weeks Islands Chapel on Whitmarsh Island. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:00PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you consider a donation in Thor’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.

Condolences to the family. I remember growing up Dad always talking about Thor and how much he enjoyed working with him. Dad always held Thor in high regard as do I. He will be missed.

Thot & I graduated from high school in the same class at St Bernard's. He was a swell easy going guy and talking with him about anything was a pleasant experience. On the basketball court he was amazing and hardly ever missed a shot. It was always a pleasure to reconnect with him at the class reunions. I want to offer my most sincere condolences to Thor's family.
