Mary Dolores Howe Myatt

Mary Dolores Howe Myatt, age 94, died on February 14, 2026, leaving a life defined by compassion, giving, and a deep devotion to Jesus Christ through her faith.

Born on October 8, 1931, Dolores was the beloved only child of James William and Margarite Estill Howe.  She had a blessed childhood and forged many lifelong friendships during her grade school years that lasted into her 90’s.  She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, St. Vincent’s Academy, and graduated from Armstrong College.  A highlight of those years was in writing for the schools’ newspapers and her heartfelt writing continued with little poems and cards for those she loved.

Dolores and Joseph Rutland Myatt were married at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in 1950, where she remained a parishioner for most of her life.   They shared a blessed and fun union for 42 years until his death.

Before children, Dolores was employed as an accountant’s assistant.  She later became a lifelong homemaker enjoying her family, many pets, cooking, sewing, crafts, and involving herself with various volunteer work. Until age 90, a favorite pastime was playing bridge with her lifelong friends whom she dearly loved.

Ever the compassionate caregiver, she, without help, took in-home care of her mother-in-law, husband, father, mother, and beloved companion, Frank, until their deaths.

In her later years, she resided at the Rose of Sharon for 17 years where with her giving nature, she went about helping others in a deeply personal, one-on-one, quiet kind of way.  She was the recipient of the Catherine McAuley Award, an alumni honor awarded by St. Vincent’s Academy   in recognition of commitment to helping others and upholding the dignity of all. 

Dolores is lovingly remembered by her two children, Joseph Rutland Myatt, Jr., Karen Sheehan and son-in-law Tim; her bonus daughter, Patsy Leander (Ray Wilcox); and her grandchildren, Moran Myatt, Joseph Myatt (Hannah), Andrew Myatt (Ashley), and Amelia Bostwick (Danny); and 10 great grandchildren.

Should there be a Tassey's Pier in the next life, then I'm certain Capt. Joe had reservations for he and Delores appropriately set for Valentines. Not a doubt that he was waiting for her arrival. My first grade class mother, I still have and cherish a Christmas ornament she made from a clothespin and gave to each student in our class.
