Alice Naomi Clark Green

Mrs. Alice Naomi Clark Green, age 102, of Savannah, died Saturday, January 31, 2026, after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 28, 1923, in Glenwood, Georgia to the late Novy Guy Clark and the late Vinnie Sumner Clark. She was a graduate of Shilo High School and was the star basketball player, "Go Lefty". She attended Brewton Parker College and graduated from Armstrong State College with a bachelor's degree. Alice married Lt. Colonel Wilbur Harold Green in 1950, a Chaplain in the United States Army, they traveled together for all his military assignments including, Germany, Japan, and Colorado Springs. Following her husband’s death, she returned to Chatham County for the remainder of her life. Alice volunteered at multiple organizations, and in 1979, at 56 years of age she founded Old Savannah Tours. She loved to share the history of Savannah with visitors. Following her retirement in 1998, Alice continued traveling, but her heart always favored Tybee Island. She loved gardening, was an avid reader, loved walking on the beach, loved birds, turtles, and collecting stamps. She never met a stranger and was always competitive, playing bridge up until death and loved living. In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by a daughter, Lenora Jean Green, three siblings, Clara Clark Montford, Myrtle Clark Dixon, and William Guy Clark.

Linda and I will miss our visits with "one of a kind" and special Lady, who we were privileged to call friend. As with Alice, we all have an appointed time to lay down life's battles ; however we were all beginning to wonder if God had forgotten Alice's appointed time. Alice's time was not forgotten by God. After each of our visits Alice would say "now don't ya'll forget where I Live". Alice, now we won't forget where you will live forever. We will see you later. Will, Teresa and Karen, you have provided such loving care for your mother and Alice knew how much you loved her.

Oh I remember Ms. Alice from when my mom worked for Old Savannah Tours!! What an incredible woman she was! She always was so sweet to me and had some incredible stories to tell. My deepest sympathies to all of her family and friends.

Sorry to hear about Alice. She had such a funny since of humor. My grandfather Hillery Sumner was close to her and would ride with her on the trolly car around Savannah many years ago. My mother Joann Flanders spoke many times on the phone. Glad she is at peace and lived such a great life.

- Cindy Keith (Sumner Family) , Guyton, GA

What an honor it was to have met and gotten to know Mrs. Alice when I worked as a guide for Old Savannah Tours, the company she founded and helped launch Savannah's tourism industry as we know it today. She may have been small in stature but her presence loomed large whether she was giving a step-on tour aboard a large motorcoach or trolley or attending an industry event. You knew she was there and you'd better snap to and pay attention and speak wit her. She was genuinely interested in people, sometimes outspoken with questions or observations of things going on around her and it all came from her good heart. Cece loved being around Mrs. Alice so much so that she could lose track of time talking with her when she was supposed to be going on tour. Dispatch would get after Cece on the radio to hustle and only then would she let Mrs. Alice know that she had to get rolling but that she'd see her later. Mrs. Alice also had an endearing way of checking you out head to toe to make sure you were dressed to her tasteful standards, right down to good shoes and she would let you know where improvement was needed. Nothing got past her, and that's what I will remember with affection and respect. You strived to be a better person in your work for having known and appreciated Mrs. Alice and what she accomplished from a humble beginning. May she rest in eternal peace.

I've been honored and privileged to have known Miss Alice since my parents, John & Ann Rogers, lived on Tybee Island in the mid-'80s and '90s. She was a part of our family gatherings, various social events and one of my mother's favorite bridge partners. She and my Mom reunited a few years ago at Harmony of Savannah and became neighbors, once again, going from cards to bingo and back to their full-fledged gab sessions and trouble-making. What a funny, beautiful, intelligent and classy lady. I've truly never known anyone who loved Savannah more and could recite more history of the city than the most educated historian. Every visit with her was an escape, like watching a good movie that you hoped would never end. She was always Southern-gracious, offering the most comfy chair for her guests to settle in for an afternoon visit. Her tales ranged from places she's visited, people who have influenced her, and the shenanigans of Savannahians, that could make the big screen if her words got out. The world has lost a treasure, but I'm certain my Mom has already welcomed her to the bridge table upstairs! So, to our Miss Alice, thanks for those precious times filled with spark and laughter and joy and save me a seat on your trolleys, no doubt, loading up at the pearly gates. - GB
