John Herbert Oldfield Jr.

Mr. John Herbert Oldfield, Jr., age 82, of Savannah, died on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. John was born on February 4, 1943 in Savannah to the late Mr. John Herbert Oldfield, Sr. and the late Mrs. Evelyn Marie Brown Oldfield. He was a native of Savannah and a graduate of Jenkins High School, after high school he faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force. John served during the Vietnam War and flew C130s, after he returned from Vietnam, he joined the Georgia National Guard and achieved the rank of Brigadier General. John was the Commander of the 157th ALS, Commander 165th Air Lift Group and retired as chief of staff of Georgia National Guard. After he retired from the Georgia National Guard, he went on to serve as an Attorney, practicing in Savannah for thirty years. He was a member of the Shriners and in his spare time he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and skiing. John was an animal lover and especially loved his dogs. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Marie Griffin.
His family includes his wife of fifty-eight years, Gay Oldfield; his son, Chris Oldfield and his wife Vicki; his siblings, Susan Hethcox and her husband Brian, William Oldfield, Mark Oldfield and his wife Tricia, Gail Merritt and her husband Tim, and Rebecca Walsh and her husband, Jim; his grandchildren, Claire and Madeline Oldfield; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon, January 31, 2026, at 12:00, at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.
Burial will be in Greenwich Cemetery on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.

Gay, I am so very sorry for your loss. John was such a sweet soul. He was always so friendly and pleasant to be around. I have missed seeing him over the past years that he has been retired. Gay, I was saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a fine man. He took me under his wing when I was a new lawyer fresh from law school. We went on to share much of our careers together. Always sharing, always finding humor in everything, he was a great mentor. Marjorie and I will be out of the country Saturday and regretfully will not be able to attend the funeral but please know that you and Chris, as well as Billy, Mark and Susan, are in our thoughts.
