Charles Rice Bourland, Jr.
Passed away on December 19, 2025
Charles Rice Bourland, Jr. died Friday, at The Oaks at The Marshes of Skidaway Island in Savannah, GA. He was born in 1933 to Margaret White Bourland and Charles Rice Bourland, Sr. of Mount Hope, WVA.
His education included Woodberry Forest School in Orange, VA in 1951 and a degree in Economics from Yale in 1955. He spent the next two years in the U.S. Navy as a LTJG on the U.S.S. Stone County, LST 1141.
Charlie was a successful businessman and a serial entrepreneur who got his start with IBM in the days of the infancy of computers and AI and whose last job was as a Partner with KPMG in St. Louis, MO. Along the way, he mentored any number of friends and employees and he was our family’s North Star, providing us with guidance, stability and a moral compass. In retirement, he played tennis at The Landings until he was 90. A member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, Children of the American Revolution and the Jamestowne Society,
he was an avid genealogist and author who taught classes in “Getting Started in Genealogy” for several years in Savannah. His passion for mentoring led him to co-found The Marshes Scholarship Foundation at The Marshes of Skidaway in 2019.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susana Bettega, and sons Charles Bourland III (Maria Aparecida) and Barry Bourland (Victoria Elena) and grandchildren Angelica (Tristan d’Adesky), Charles IV and Tyler, all of Miami, as well as the mother of his children, Valerie English Farrar of Miami and his brother White Bourland of Cincinnati, Ohio.
In keeping with Charlie’s wishes, there will be no public service or formal memorial.
