Celebrating the life of

Arthur "Art" James Ohmer

July 08, 1941 - December 10, 2025

Arthur

Mr. Arthur James Ohmer, known to most as “Art,” 84, of Savannah, died Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Azalealand Nursing Home. He was born July 8, 1941, in West Palm Beach, Florida, to the late James Clarence Ohmer and Hazel Burrus Ohmer.

Art proudly served in the United States Army for more than seven years. During the Vietnam War, he flew helicopter missions in Huey and Cobra aircraft and also served as a fixed-wing pilot and aerial photographer.

Art spent most of his life in Savannah, where his entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate several local businesses, including Arturo’s Sub Pub, Penguin Photo, and Gilligan’s Beverage Center on Wilmington Island, which he opened almost 40 years ago. From a young age through his late teens, Art was a dedicated swimmer and a state champion while living in Florida. He remained connected to aviation throughout his life as a member of the Civil Air Patrol, served as Jimmy Carter’s private pilot during his campaign for governor, and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen.

In his spare time, Art enjoyed fishing, hunting, and quiet moments at home. What he loved most, however, was time spent with family, friends, and his cat, Kitty Kitty Meow Meow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Redifer.

He is survived by Brenda Morey of Rincon, the love of his life for twenty years; his daughter, Lauren Ohmer of Savannah; his son, Christopher Ohmer of Savannah; and one grandson, Arturo, affectionately known to Art as “R2.”

A celebration of Art’s life will be held on Friday morning, December 19, 2025 at 11:00 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors Islands Chapel, 4605 US Highway 80 East, Savannah, GA 31410. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with military honors.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
