Celebrating the life of

H. Cleve Roby, Jr.

Passed away on August 12, 2025

H. Cleve Roby, Jr.

H. Cleve Roby, Jr., one of the best-dressed storytellers on Savannah’s golf courses, played through his last back nine on August 12, 2025. After 80 years, Cleve left peacefully with three generations of his family by his side. Preceding him in death were his parents, Harry C. Roby Sr. and Elfrieda Thorpe Roby; his sister, Diane Vaughan; his nephew, Stephen Vaughan; his father and mother-in-law, Charles E. “Bud” Combs and Dorothy Combs; and his brother-in-law, Ed Combs.

Cleve was a proud graduate of H.V. Jenkins High School and the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, Cleve left his beloved Athens to begin a career in sales. Cleve’s success and longevity in sales can be attributed to his easy-going demeanor, ability to spin yarns, and many interests that included an encyclopedic knowledge of Georgia athletics. Cleve’s retirement was short-lived, however, and he soon became a member of the International Longshoreman’s Association. His work as a checker allowed him to share his master-gardener knowledge, golf advice, and tales of his kids and grandkids with his Georgia Ports Authority friends.

Cleve’s North Star was his family, especially his wife of 57 years, Mickie Combs Roby, who will perpetually keep him in her heart. Cleve will be missed dearly by those that he was most proud of; his daughters: Rene’ Shaw, Courtney Todaro (Zach), and Stacey Wells (Ben); and his grandchildren: Lexi Bradshaw (Shane), Lizzie Shaw, Charles Wells, Morgan Todaro, and Harrison Todaro; his sister and brother-in-law Darlene and Ruban Roberts; and many extended family.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Memorial Drive, between 2:00-4:00 pm.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Lutheran Church of The Ascension, 120 Bull Street, at 2:00 pm followed by a reception in the church social hall.

For the visitation and Celebration of Life, let Cleve smile by wearing Augusta National or your game day colors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Cleve’s memory to Lutheran Church of The Ascension, Catie’s Fund of CURE Childhood Cancer, World Central Kitchen, Hospice Savannah, or a charity of your choice.
