Celebrating the life of
Doris Stancill Dickerson
Passed away on July 21, 2025

Doris Stancill Dickerson, 81, passed away on July 21, 2025 in Savannah, GA. Doris was born in Washington, North Carolina to Durwood O. Stancill and Gladys Nelson. She graduated from Washington High School in 1962 and moved to Raleigh, NC to attend Hardbarger Junior School of Business. She worked as a Clerk at Southern Bell from 1963 to 1973 and as a Clerk Typist in the Administrative Computing Services Department of NC State University from 1987-1992. She then decided to return to school for a degree in Mortuary Science. She graduated from Fayetteville Technical Community College and became a certified Funeral Director in 1996. She worked in funeral homes in both North Carolina and Florida for the next several years before settling in Wilmington, NC in 2003. She worked part-time at the New Hanover County Arboretum and became a Master Gardener. In 2021, she moved to Savannah, GA to be close to family. She is survived by a daughter, Adrienne Lynn Dickerson in Savannah, and a brother, Larry Stancill in Del Rio, Tennessee. As per her wishes, there will be no service.
Doris will be remembered by friends and family as a wickedly funny and irreverent jokester. Even struggling with dementia in her last years, she managed a tight hold on her quick wit and snarky charm. She was saucy, eccentric, and at times downright bawdy. She could make your jaw drop with her sharp tongue, or make you bark with laughter with her unexpected quips. She was a truly singular character, and she will be sorely missed.
In lieu of sending flowers or making donations, please honor Doris’s memory by taking a walk in the woods or on the beach. Go listen to birds sing, or to waves lapping at the shore. That is where you will find her spirit, and that is where you can say a proper goodbye.
