Celebrating the life of

John L. Curry

January 13, 1967 - May 18, 2025

John L. Curry

John Lawrence Curry, Sr., 58, passed away on Sunday morning, May 18th, 2025, at Memorial Hospital, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was a force of lovable energy and embraced the fullness of life.

He was born on January 13, 1967, in Savannah, Georgia to the late Herbert James Curry, Sr, and Frances Moore Curry. He grew up working for his parents in the family dry cleaning business, Curry Dry Cleaners, which was started in 1944 by his grandfather, H.Y. Curry. He later became the owner, and he worked very hard, taking great pride in treating his employees and customers with the utmost respect. He was grateful for the loyalty and patronage of so many in the Savannah area that recently helped the family business celebrate it’s 80th year in operation.

He was a member of the Calvary Day School Class of 1985 and remained very close with many of his classmates.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing, both passions that he shared enthusiastically with his family. He admired God’s creation and spent a great deal of his time outdoors, breathing in the fresh air, caring for his yard and soaking up the sun. He loved the peace and tranquility he found in nature. He was also a dedicated sports fan. It didn’t matter what two teams were playing, he never turned down the chance to watch a football game and cheered for seemingly every team, but had a special place in his heart for the SEC. He also loved the game of golf, for it combined all of his favorite things into one experience…quality time, healthy competition, skill, sportsmanship and pristine landscapes.

For all of these passions and interests, none came close to the love he possessed for his family and Jesus Christ. He was a true family man and a faithful member of Good Shepherd Savannah. Even up until the very end of his life, he spoke often to anyone who would listen about the unfailing love of God, praying with and for many of his nurses and doctors throughout his treatment. He loved larger than life and never met a stranger, extending kindness to everyone. He had a unique gift for making people feel so special and he was never too proud to tell someone he loved them. His enormous heart made all the difference in the lives of those who loved him and his generosity was endless.

He is preceded in death by his father, Herbert James Curry, Sr., and brother, Herbert James Curry, Jr. “Herbie.”

He is survived by the love of his life, kindergarten sweetheart and wife of 39 years, Lisa Reid Curry; his mother, Frances Curry; his three children, Ashley Berry (James), John Curry, Jr. (Sarah) all of Savannah; and Emily Jenkins (Bryan), of Waynesboro, Ga. Also surviving are his six beautiful grandchildren, the pride and joy of his life, Charlotte, William, John III, Sophia, Leighton, and Josie. There was nothing he loved more than having his children and grandchildren all together, living life to the fullest. He is also survived by his in-laws, Johnnie and Larry Reid of Savannah; sister, Cathy Knight (David) of Springfield, Ga; brother-in-law, David Reid (Vickie) of Keller, Tx; sister-in-law, Angela Myers (Erik) of Rincon, GA as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 23, 2025, at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Good Shepherd Church, 22 Rose Ave, Isle of Hope.

Pallbearers will be his lifelong friends, Charles Taylor, Terry Otto, Frank Scarbrough, Bubba Strickland, Michael Fell, and Kelmer Durden.

In lieu of flowers the family requests remembrances be made to the new facility fund at Good Shepherd Savannah, P.O. Box 15624, Savannah, Ga, 31416., or the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, therapists and physicians at the Medical ICU at Memorial Hospital, Low Country Cancer Care, and The Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute. Their kindness, compassion and commitment to their patients is a living example of the selfless love of God.

My prayers are with all of you at this time of sadness. As I read the tribute to his life it seemed completely fitting that I should share the verse of the day that I received in my inbox right after hearing of his passing on Sunday. Ps 100:4 Enter his courts with thanksgiving and praise. That sounds like exactly what he was doing. May God continue to fill your heart with comfort

Cousin John was a beautiful person, just like his Mother and Father. We haven't been to see his family for a long while because of health reasons, not because we didn't want to come to Savannah, we jus couldn't. John was ALWAYS a force to be reckoned with..........great Father......Great hunter....Super boss.....Hard worker.........GOD Loving Christian........just can't say enough about Him!! But look where he came from. His Grandaddy on his Mothers side was a policeman in Savannah for many years. His Grandmother, Helen, was part of my soul, mischievous and funny and vivacious and loving........all bundled up in a red-headed package of dynamite! They both loved their children deeply! John took after his Daddy by being a quiet, loving Christian Man. Francis, his Mom, is also a piece of my soul.........a gracious "Suthern" lady that loved all her family unconditionally, in spite of anything that came along. Herbert's Parents were great people also, but I didn't know them like I knew Uncle Marvette and Aunt Helen. So if you many friends of John had a question about why he was such a Wonderful Person........He got it Honestly!!! God Welcomed him home with OPEN arms!!! JOHN, Rest In Peace in the Arms of Your LORD JESUS CHRIST. I'll see you on the other side, BROTHER!! We pray for John's Family for their loss of Husband, Dad, and Friend. AMEN....and....AMEN

John was such a good, good man. Im so glad I got to hug him one last time. He was such a comforting presence everywhere he went. I'm going to miss his but I take great comfort, as I'm sure you all do as well, knowing his final destination and that we'll all be able to see him again. The great and amazing power of the one true God, Jesus Christ is the most amazing comfort in times like these. Im praying for you all and sending all my love.

- Megan Gnann, Savannah, GA

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time. Love, Jackie Boney (Levy Jewelers)

Lisa and family, This has been a season of loss for many in our community, and I'm so sorry that John has passed. I met him first as Herbie's brother and from coming into Curry's and seeing him wearing his familiar Savannah Golf Club shirts... he always had a good word and a ready smile to offer to everyone who came into the store. It was a pleasure to have gotten to know John. He consoled me with kind words when I came into the store to drop off some of Cece's clothes for dry cleaning shortly after she had passed away. He knew that wasn't an easy task for me, and his kindness won't be forgotten. Please know that y'all are being held in many hearts and minds during these sad times, and that he will be forever missed by all who knew him.

- Julia J. Williams, Isle of Hope, Georgia

We are long time customers. Eternally rest grant unto him and may perpetual light shine upon him.
