Milree Garvin Mackey Calhoun

Milree Garvin Mackey Calhoun    MiMi

Milree was born on July 25, 1943 at Mary Telfair Women’s Hospital in Savannah, GA.  Her parents were William Gadsen Mackey & Ruth Alene Garvin.

She resided in Savannah & Charleston and spent four years in the Philippines as a teenager.  She returned to the states and finished high school at Brenau Academy before entering the University of Georgia. She also lived in Singapore for a year.  She spent the rest of her life in Savannah.

Milree was a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and The Society of First Families of South Carolina 1670-1700.

Milree was an incredibly skilled genealogist and began researching ancestry many years before online services came along.  She spent countless hours combing through microfilm, historic records, and archived files.  Through her research, Milree discovered that she was the 5th granddaughter of Robert (Rob Roy) MacGregor - the famed Scottish folk hero and was a descendant of the Ihly family who came with the Salzburgers to Ebenezer, GA in the early 1700’s.  Milree was well known for her love of ancestry and vast knowledge of history.  She produced countless ancestry reports for her and her husband’s families, and many of her close friends.

Milree worked as the Savannah Bar Pilots Office Manager for 16 years and then as the bookkeeper for Savannah Candy Kitchen for six years.

Milree was always ready to travel, especially when family & friends were there to share an adventure.  She loved the water.  She always wanted to go to the beach, boating on the intracoastal waterways, or deep sea fishing.  She particularly loved the pool at the Savannah Yacht Club.

Milree was predeceased by her loving husband of 24 years, Andrew Pickens Calhoun, Jr. who passed on October 31, 2024.  She was also preceded in death by her Daughter, Karin Elizabeth Willis and her brothers, Gordon Neal Mackey of Savannah, GA, and Malcolm Hamilton Mackey of Sherman Oaks, CA

She is survived by her children Gerald Talbert ‘Tal’ Willis, Jr. (Ruth) of Hobe Sound, FL, and Michael Garvin Willis of Irmo, SC.

She is also survived by her ‘bonus children’ Catherine Calhoun Witek of Statesboro, GA, Ansley Calhoun Mays (Larry) of Statesboro, GA, and Andrew Pickens Calhoun, III (Andy) of KY

She was lovingly known as ‘Mimi' to her Grandchildren: Reagan, Riley (Ansley), Dustin, Daniel, Jordan (Cate), Rachel, Jalen, John, Lily, Jacob (Andrew) and Great Grandchild James (Dustin)

She is also survived by her brother William ‘Bill’ G. Mackey (Carol) of Jacksonville, FL (Adrian), and nephews Robert Gordon Mackey, (Brooke) of Daufuskie, SC, (Faith, Auva), and William Thomas Mackey (Jason) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
