Celebrating the life of
George K. Tarasovic
Passed away on October 24, 2019
George K. Tarasovic, born in Granville, NY, in 1930, passed away on October 24, 2019, at the age of 89 in Savannah, GA. Although being born in NY, George spent his childhood in Bridgeport, CT, with his two older sisters (Mary and Helen) and younger brother (Phillip). George, a graduate of Warren Harding High School, was an outstanding All-state high school football center and linebacker on a state championship team. He went south to Louisiana State University to pursue his football career. He gained All-Southeastern Conference, and All-American honors in 1951 at center and linebacker. George, a second-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1952, played with them from 1952-1963, earning the Dapper-Dan award in 1959. George finished his career in 1967 after playing for the Denver Broncos and the Philadelphia Eagles.
At the age of 26, while playing for the Steelers, he married the love of his life Betty Lou Anderson of Pittsburgh, and they were happily married for the next 61 years until her passing in October 2016. After retiring from football, George and Betty Lou moved to York, PA, calling it home for the next 48 years. In York, George and Betty Lou raised their two children, and he co-founded the York County Special Olympics Celebrity Golf Tournament with Eddie Kayak, one of his proudest accomplishments. The tournament has raised in the neighborhood of $800,000 for Special Olympics and was one reason for his induction into the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
George is survived by his daughter, Sally Tarasovic of Savannah, GA; his son, George K. Tarasovic Jr. of Richmond, VA; his grandchildren Jocelyn Bierman of Savannah, GA, Bailey Tarasovic, Jackson Tarasovic, and Sam Tarasovic, all of Richmond, VA.
George had a great sense of humor; you could not help but smile when you were around him. Always a gentleman, he loved his family, football, golf, and the YMCA. His friends and family will miss him immensely, but we take solace in knowing that he is once again by the side of his beloved wife, Betty Lou.
George will return to Pittsburgh, PA to be laid to rest.

George and I became acquainted at the York YMCA. I was one of his massage therapists. The manager said i would have to work on him because no one was big enough or strong enough to handle him. I accepted the challenge. When George came in, I thought, "wow, this dude is huge"...he handed me a sawed off baseball bat & proceeded to tell me how I was gonna work him over with it. I laughed but he was sincere and instructed me how to use this bat on his quads, hams and back...HALF the pressure he wanted and I used would injure most humans, but he kept scheduling with me. He shared stories of his career and life. He was particularly dedicated to his wife and family, that was always right there...George was an honorable man and I'm glad our paths crossed. He honed my skills and contributed to my life in a number of ways...i have fond memories of him. George...hey man
