Celebrating the life of

Barbara Buchanan Strong

February 28, 1943 - February 20, 2025

Barbara Buchanan Strong

The matriarch of our family, Barbara Buchanan Strong, lovingly known as “Bobbie or Bebe” was joyfully reunited with the love of her life and Jesus on February 20th surrounded by her 4 children.  Born on February 28, 1943, in Hazlehurst, Georgia, Bobbie lived a life full of love, laughter, and generosity. She graduated from Jenkins High School, and married Walter Hartridge Strong, Jr.

A devoted mother, she found her greatest joy in gathering family and friends around the table, hosting memorable dinners, and celebrating every holiday with warmth and enthusiasm. She loved to host the wives and children of the St Nicholas Society and plan her cherished monthly Birthday Girls gatherings. Bobbie always joked she needed to work on her obituary, however her legacy was lived every day. One of her most cherished occasions was manifested every Thanksgiving with four generations sharing and creating many special memories.

A self-taught artist, Bobbie had a creative soul, whether painting, or decorating.  She had a gift for transforming every house they lived into a beautiful home filled with love. Her generous spirit and welcoming nature made everyone feel at home.

Bobbie cherished her time on the water, walking the shores of Wassaw Beach with her beloved husband, Walter, and spending weekends boating with family and friends. She loved gathering with her close friends and family, especially jumping at any opportunity to dress up in costume and bring laughter to those around her.

Bobbie was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Colonial Dames of Savannah, and the Junior League of Savannah. She brought joy, kindness, and humor wherever she went, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Her cheerful presence, quick wit, and boundless love will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of her family and friends.

Bobbie is survived by her 4 children; Susan Banks (Rod), Wendy Lupas (Sam), Mary Blackburn (Jerry) and Walter Strong, III (Lavinia); 11 grandchildren, their spouses and 5 great grandchildren

Following a private family service, a visitation and reception will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 3:30 at The Savannah Yacht Club. Please join us to raise a toast to Bobbie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St John’s Episcopal Church.

GUEST BOOK

Bobbie gave me my first job at Brenda Allens clothing store in the late 70's. She was a lovely person and have always remembered her fondly over the years.

My love and sympathy is with your family during this time. I feel so blessed that I was able to meet “Bebe” and “Big Daddy” at Wade’s and Brooke’s wedding. I pray that God will shelter you all in His loving arms and give you the peace that only He can provide during our earthly losses. Love and prayers, Vickie Martin

Dear Mary, Wendy, Susan, and Walter, I am shocked to see this obituary. I just sent Bobbie a Happy Birthday message on Facebook a few days ago. I knew that she had been scheduled for a Cardioversion that was postponed, but didn’t realize that she was in such a critical condition. I adored Bobbie and I loved that she got a kick out of dressing up in costume, which is why she made such a great “dwarf” for our Snow White fiasco on Halloween one year! Bobbie and I had a standing joke during Christmas because we would see each other at Publix buying Cocoa, powdered sugar, mayonnaise, and anything else that we thought we might need…..only because we hadn’t checked the pantry before we left home to see what we “ really” needed. Therefore, we would see that we had a surplus left over from the year before after looking in the pantry when we returned home. This was a standing joke between us!!! I loved her so much, and I am so sad about her passing, but so happy that she and Walter are together again. May God bless you all with the Spiritual, mental, and physical strength now and in the days to come. My love, hugs, and prayers for each of you. Jan
